Target: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
Goal: Keep the UN investigation of chemical weapons in Syria unbiased.
The Assad regime in Syria has numerous stories of humanitarian abuse and has violently oppressed their political opposition for years. Yet despite these atrocities, the Russian and Chinese governments have strongly backed the Syrian dictator and, as permanent members of the UN securities council, have deterred any UN action against the Syrian dictator in the past. However, after reports of chemical weapons use surfaced recently, the UN chemical weapons probe of Syria should not have to include representatives from every permanent member of the Security Council, but should instead focus on accuracy.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is currently finalizing a team of chemists to investigate these very serious reports. However, Russia has slowed the process by insisting that each of the five permanent countries in the UN Security Council should send representatives.
The Syrian civil war has claimed 70,000 lives and sent hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing for borders. Yet as long as the Syrian opposition is supported in name only by the French, British, and US (though that may soon change), and the Chinese and Russians have strongly supported the current Syrian government, there is no end in sight. With such dire consequences, this political stalemate within the UN Security Council cannot be allowed to blur the results of UN investigation of chemical weapons or any following actions.
The world must know that the use of chemical weapons are absolutely prohibited and will be punished to the fullest extent of International Law.
Please sign this petition and urge the UN Security Council not to fold to the Russians demands and finally involve the UN in putting an end to this terrible Syrian civil war.
Dear General Secretary Ban Ki-moon,
The upcoming UN chemical weapons probe of Syria is currently being complicated by Russia’s demand to have a representative from each of the five permanent members of the Security Council on the investigation.
Russia has strongly backed the Assad regime and has stopped UN action in Syria numerous times in the past. As General Secretary Ban-Ki moon chooses the scientists to investigate the claims of chemical weapons use, it is time that political affiliations no longer blur this conflict.
70,000 lives have been lost during the Syrian Civil War and hundreds of thousands more have been sent fleeing for borders. Something must be done on the international stage in order to bring this horrific war to an end, especially now that it appears the Assad regime has reverted to drastic tactics.
With the political tensions running high and possible military intervention from the US, British, and French, time and accuracy are of the essence in this UN chemical weapons probe, and political ideologies must be removed as much as possible.
Please do all that you can to ensure the Russians’ demands are not met and the UN investigation team be as politically unbiased as possible.
