Target: Ben Carson, Leading Neurosurgeon
Goal: Express dissent for Ben Carson’s comments equating homosexuality with pedophilia and bestiality.
During a recent interview with Fox News, leading neurosurgeon Ben Carson made offensive comments about same-sex marriage. He claimed that marriage is “a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association), be they people who believe in bestiality… get to change the definition.” This comment equates same-sex marriage with bestiality and pedophilia, which are not only abhorrent, but illegal in the Unites States and most of the world. Carson makes homosexuality appear to be criminal behavior rather than a loving union between two people. This statement also denies gays and lesbians the right to participate in democracy by contesting the definition of traditional marriage.
Carson recently issued an apology for his statement, and claimed that he “loves gay people.” However, this does not undo the damage that his prior comment caused. Loving “gay people” is just another way of saying that all “gay people” are the same, which is another form of discrimination. Gays and lesbians are as diverse as any other group of people in the world and deserve to be recognized as individuals, rather than as a homogenous group. Although his apology is appreciated, Carson’s homophobic comments cannot be erased.
For decades, homosexuals have fought discrimination. Sodomy used to be illegal throughout much of Europe and in the United States. Now that our country is on the brink of equality for same-sex couples, Carson’s comments could have a devastating impact by equating gay marriage with criminal acts. Please show your dissent for Carson’s comments equating same-sex marriage with bestiality and pedophilia.
Dear Dr. Ben Carson,
Your recent comment on Fox News, which equated same-sex marriage with bestiality and pedophilia, was insensitive and untrue. Same-sex marriage is a way for two committed individuals to express their love and commitment for one another, and is not similar to child molestation or sexual abuse of an animal. Not only did your comment criminalize homosexuality, but by saying that gays and lesbians do not “get to change the definition” of marriage, you are denying their rights to participate in democracy by contesting the government’s right to restrict the definition of marriage.
Shortly after this comment, you issued an apology. While your apology is appreciated, it does not undo the damage that was caused by your comment. Further, claiming that you “love gay people” does not really demonstrate that you understand that homosexuality is not a criminal act and that same-sex marriage is different from bestiality and pedophilia. Please stop making hateful, homophobic comments.
