Provide Better Protection for Female Teachers and Students in Pakistan

Target: President Asif Ali Zardari

Goal: Offer more protection for female teachers and students in Pakistan

A recent murder of a teacher in Pakistan has reiterated the importance of improving protection and safety for educational professionals within the community. Shahnaz Nazli was going about a normal day, heading to the all girls’ school where she taught regularly when two men shot her. Nazli was working in the northwestern Khyber tribal district where she was fatally murdered and could not be saved. This horrible tragedy continues to emphasize the importance of enforcing better protection for teachers and students in Pakistan.

Nazli was a teacher for 24 years and never received any threats in the past, which is why her husband Ishtiaq Ahmad was shocked to hear of her death. However, violence against teachers, female students and women is common in this nation. Nazli was actually with her son, Daniyal Ahmad, the day she passed away. According to her son, the two men stopped their motorcycles and shot at her. They warned the son to leave before shooting his mother again. This amount of brutality and hatred geared toward women is unacceptable and needs to be changed.

In a CNN article, Ishtiaq stated: “There was no security from the government. Not just for my wife, but for all the teachers. My wife was martyred while she was on duty.”

The level of security and concern over the women in this country needs to be increased. Women, especially those that risk their lives to help others gain an education, need to be better protected by the government from terrorist groups. No one has been arrested for Nazli’s murder and the government must investigate this case. Unfortunately, Nazli’s murder is not the only case of hatred shown toward women in this nation. Just last year, a group of men shot 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai because she was actively seeking an education. Malala has since recovered from the horrible incident.

Women and girls need to be better protected in Pakistan. Sign the petition below to urge the nation’s president to take action immediately.

Dear President Asif Ali Zardari,

The recent murder of schoolteacher Shahnaz Nazli continues to place stress on the importance of protecting educational professionals and students in Pakistan. Nazli was a courageous woman who was brave enough to teach at an all girls’ school in a country that does not offer a lot of opportunities for girls, and she was murdered because of it.

Her death reiterates the fact that the Pakistani government does not offer any form of security or help for these women. Although Nazli never received a threat before, being a teacher already placed her in grave danger and the government did not do anything to help prevent this horrible incident.

The government must provide more security and protect teachers and students.
