Stop Distressing Phone Calls to Sandy Hook Town Residents

Target: Kyle Weaver, Director of General Operations – National Rifle Association (NRA)

Goal: Stop distressing Connecticut residents with repeated calls asking for their support of gun rights.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) recently launched a campaign of automated calls asking that people oppose new and more restrictive gun laws in Connecticut. In a display of careless insensitivity, calls are being sent to residents in Newtown Connecticut – the city so recently involved in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. These calls are distressing families still struggling to cope with the tragedy. Demand that the NRA stop calling Newtown residents immediately.

The automated calls are being sent out en masse, to “defend” against increased gun-safety legislation resulting from the Sandy Hook shooting. The NRA is completely denying that there is a lesson to be learned from Sandy Hook and other recent episodes of gun violence – a callous reaction to these tragedies exemplified by the “robocalls” being sent out to people of Newtown, Connecticut.

“I received one of these,” Newtown resident Christopher Wenis wrote on Facebook. “I was insulted and offended. I’ve got a 5-year-old son who went to preschool on the Sandy Hook Elementary School campus, and this was a really hard week for me on a lot of levels. These calls were the very last thing I needed.”  Wenis kept receiving calls through the week, although he called the NRA twice requesting to be placed on the “do not call” list. The NRA maintains that it is only placing calls to its “members and supporters”, but this statement is obviously false, as Newtown residents falling into neither of those categories are receiving the unwanted messages.

No matter what claims the NRA makes, it has caused undue suffering to families recently torn apart by a horrific tragedy. Reign in these self-serving and shortsighted tactics. Sign this petition and demand that the NRA stop calling residents of Newtown, Connecticut.

Dear Kyle Weaver,

The NRA has recently launched an automated call campaign in Connecticut aimed at building opposition to new and more restrictive gun control laws in the state. Although many residents of Newtown Connecticut are still recovering from the shock of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, they are now receiving calls entreating them to support the distribution and use of guns.

This callous move by the NRA has caused undue distress to many families in the area. In the midst of trying to forget a tragic event, they are being repeatedly called by an organization in favor of weapons like the one used in the shooting that so recently occurred in their neighborhood.

The legislation under attack by your calls is a result of gun violence in general, and the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in particular. If avoiding the association of horrific violence with guns is your goal, you have failed. If maintaining the positive image of the NRA is your goal, you have failed. It would be a strategically wise and ethically correct course of action for you to cease making automated calls to Newport Connecticut immediately.

I think this is disgusting and I would also like to see a focus on removing people like Adam Lanza from society where they can do people no harm.
