Tell Discovery Channel to Stop Promoting Racism

Target: David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications

Goal: Encourage the Discovery Channel to stop racist programming and include ethnic diversity in their casting.

The Discovery Channel recently launched a show called “Under the Hood,” which features members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), the notorious racist and anti-Semitic hate group that emerged after the emancipation of African Americans in the Southern United States. This group has been associated with some of the worst crimes against humanity in American history, including hundreds of lynchings. The show on Discovery portrays the KKK as a misunderstood group of activists, which have been misrepresented by history teachers and the media. The show glorifies and justifies the behavior and activism of the most renowned hate group in America.

Not only is the show “Under the Hood” an obviously racist and anti-Semitic addition to Discovery Network programming, and the channel uses almost exclusively Caucasian actors. Racial minorities are greatly underrepresented on Discovery, even compared to other television networks. For young African Americans, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, and other ethnic minorities, this sends a racially charged message about white supremacy. By choosing not to cast racial minorities on their shows, the Discovery Channel is endorsing racism.

Sympathizing with the Ku Klux Klan and refusing to feature ethnic minorities on the Discovery Channel, a network supposedly designed to promote learning and exploration, is unacceptable. Tell the CEO of Discovery Communications to stop airing racist programming and to include racial minorities on its shows.

Dear David Zaslav,

The Discovery Channel has recently aired a new show entitled “Under the Hood,” which features and sympathizes with Ku Klux Klan members. In several episodes, members of the KKK claim to be misrepresented and misunderstood. However, history proves that the KKK has been one of the most vicious hate groups in American history that has consistently promoted racism and anti-Semitism. By airing this show and allowing KKK members to justify their actions, the Discovery Channel is promoting racism and hatred.

Beyond the show, racial demographics on the Discovery Channel reveal concerning trends. The vast majority of actors and so-called reality stars on the Discovery Channel are Caucasian. African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans and other racial minorities are greatly underrepresented, even compared to other networks. As a channel that is supposed to promote education and exploration, it is imperative that your channel stop sending racially charged messages to children. Please stop airing racist programming and include more racial diversity in your casting.
