Urge Sporting Goods Company to Manufacture All Products In America

lacing football: The New York Times

Target: Mr. Roger Talermo, CEO of Amer Group, which owns Wilson’s Sporting Goods

Goal: Make all of Wilson’s Sporting Goods products in the USA

Wilson’s Sporting Goods is an all-American company devoted to all-American sports. It makes its footballs in an American factory in Ada, Ohio, but it makes its basketballs in China.

Most of Ohio is traditionally manufacturing-based, along with other Rust Belt states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Scores of manufacturing cities and towns, most notoriously Detroit, became shells of what they once were when corporations began outsourcing labor on a wide scale. Over the last few years, Michigan and Ohio were the two states with the most precipitous drop in employment.

Ada, Ohio could really use more manufacturing jobs. The average income for a household is $24,665, and 21.9% of the population is in poverty. Wilson’s Sporting Goods, on the other hand, netted $600 million in 2012. Wilson’s makes balls, uniforms, baseball gloves, golf equipment, and other sporting goods for professional teams. Its footballs have been used at the Super Bowl since 1941.

To Wilson’s credit, employees at the factory in Ada say they earn a good wage for the area, and that the average employee has worked at the factory for 20 years. Wilson’s already knows how to provide good jobs for American citizens: please encourage CEO Roger Talermo to have all of Wilson’s goods made in America.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Talermo,

We would like to ask you to start making all of Wilson’s Sporting Goods products in America, like your footballs are. The lack of American manufacturing jobs has plunged the Rust Belt into poverty.

We commend you for paying good wages and retaining workers in your football factory in Ada, Ohio. Most of the workers interviewed in The New York Times seemed quite content with their jobs.

But Ada could really use some more manufacturing jobs. The average household income is $24,665, and 21.9% of the population is in poverty.

Wilson’s takes great pride in manufacturing footballs in America: your website states that “every Super Bowl touchdown pass caught or extra point kicked has been scored with an American-made football. The quality of the Official NFL Football is a direct result of the professionalism and skilled craftsmanship of the workers in Ada.”

Please give those professionals greater opportunities to produce more fine goods and bring prosperity to their town.

Sincerely,
