Stop the Sale of Pets in California Flea Markets

Target: California Legislators

Goal: To end the sale of animals in flea markets and swap meets

California flea markets and swap meets are not an ideal place to adopt a pet. Unfortunately, it is common to see puppies, kittens, reptiles and birds for sale in the horrible conditions of these facilities. The selling of these animals in unsanitary conditions will only continue if we don’t act to stop it.

The animals are often left in horrible conditions for several days. They are shoved in small, crowded cages and are left outside in extreme temperatures and weather conditions. They can go hours without being cared for, which can inevitably lead to severe health problems.

Not only are the animals mistreated, many of them are also exotic and smuggled into the country. The birds that are for sale at the flea markets can often carry parasites and diseases which can spread to the other animals. An impulsive purchase of a pet at a flea market could turn into a very costly problem.

The animals for sale at these markets are often in need of medical care. People continue to buy them not knowing of their existing medical problems, which is misleading and cruel to the animal. Sign the petition below to ask California legislators to ban the selling of these animals.

Dear California Legislators,

A flea market is not a typical place where you would think to buy a pet. The outdoor conditions can often be uncomfortable for the patrons, let alone the animals that are stuck in the cages. The puppies, kittens, birds and reptiles that are for sale are often in need of medical attention before they can be adopted. Your state needs to outlaw these sales and prevent people from profiting off of sick animals.

The exotic birds that are sold in these markets are often smuggled into our country. This means they could be covered in diseases that will be infected onto our people and animals. The people who are purchasing these animals will be oblivious to the potential problems that buying a flea market pet can create.

A flea market is an inappropriate place to sell animals. Not only does it create impulse buying of living animals, but the conditions the animals are left in are inhumane. We are asking you to please ban the sale of animals in these markets.

  1. J Davidson says:

Most of these animals end up as unwanted, abandoned impulse purchases without proper care.

  2. Not all animals in the flea market are sick or miss treated but don’t get me wrong they are lots of animals that are but those are the vendors that don’t care but people who really care bout there animals who gave them the best care. But I disagree with the bill but I think California should take out the people who don’t know bout the animals they’re sell an miss treated but not those who don’t
