Target: President of the General National Congress of Libya, Mohammed Magariaf
Goal: To urge the Libyan government to end the persecution of Tawerghans
The inhabitants of Tawergha in Libya have endured a number of violent attacks. Because many view the people of Tawergha as having supported Muammar Gaddafi, they are targeted as “traitors.” As stated by Human Rights Watch, “Armed groups from Misrata, about 30 kilometers north, have been responsible for most of the abuses. These groups accuse Tawerghans of having fought with or supported pro-Gaddafi forces during the 2011 conflict, and of committing war crimes in Misrata. The Libyan government and Misrata authorities have been unable to rein in these abusive armed groups.”
Around 40,000 Tawerghans have been subjected to torture, forced relocation, and other various violations of human rights. These are crimes against humanity and cannot be tolerated. Although there were some Tawerghans that contributed to the terror of Gaddafian rule, an entire community cannot be condemned for the actions of a few.
The Libyan government needs to correct this and allocate enough resources towards securing the safety and security of the Tawerghans. They need to realize that many of these attacks, whether they be murder, torture, or arson-based, are stemming from militant groups fueled by the same prejudices that paved the way for Gadaffian atrocities.
Sign below to let Libyan leaders know that they need to protect the Tawerghans from further persecution.
Dear President Mohammed Magariaf,
While we do realize that some Tawerghans did commit atrocities guided by the hand of the dictator Gaddafi, a single community should not be persecuted for the actions of a few. Surely you are aware of the current problem facing your country, as Tawerghan-aimed violence is prevalent among many neighboring lands.
Please allocate enough resources towards stopping these militant groups from torturing and killing thousands of innocent Tawerghans. These deaths and atrocities are based in prejudice and are crimes against humanity. Please do all that you can to stop the perpetuation of this wrongful persecution of the Tawerghans.
