Target: David McLaughlin, Interim Superintendent, Hesperia Unified School District
Goal: End staff bullying and harassment of LGBT students at Sultana High School.
Students at Sultana High School in Southern California are speaking out about bullying and discrimination against LGBT students by the school’s faculty and administrators. Allegations against the school staff include claims that several teachers have made insensitive homophobic remarks and suppressed the speech of the Gay Straight Alliance club. Teachers should be promoting a supportive educational experience for all students and making an effort to stop bullying. Urge the school district’s superintendent to end discrimination and harassment of LGBT students at Sultana High School by educating faculty members and incorporating a harassment-prevention program.
Teachers and administrators at Sultana High School have made harassing remarks such as “that’s so gay” and “the gays are the real bullies.” Although students have submitted written and verbal complaints, administrators have ignored them all. There have also been claims that school officials censored the Gay Straight Alliance’s flyers and announcements, as well as rejecting its campaign to discuss homophobia and bullying. Instead of promoting equality and providing a welcome environment, as schools should do, faculty at Sultana High School are ostracizing its LGBT population by ignoring harassment complaints or partaking in the harassment directly. The school’s administrators have also imposed gender stereotypes by forbidding girls from wearing tuxedos to prom and also selectively enforcing rules concerning public displays of affection among gay couples.
Teachers should be setting a good example for students by promoting equality, free speech, and tolerance. However, at Sultana High School, the teachers themselves are the bullies, and they are spreading messages of hate and intolerance. This should not be allowed and a harassment-prevention program must be implemented. Sultana’s Gay Straight Alliance club should receive equal treatment as other clubs, and the faculty should cease making discriminatory comments. Sign the petition to urge interim superintendent David McLaughlin to take action against LGBT harassment immediately.
Dear Superintendent McLaughlin,
I am shocked to hear of the discrimination and harassment toward LGBT students at Sultana High School by the school’s staff and faculty members. Instead of promoting a supportive educational experience, some of the teachers at Sultana High School are bullying gay students and discriminating against the school’s Gay Straight Alliance. This type of behavior should not be tolerated, as educators should not be condoning harassment.
As you may know, it has been reported that teachers and administrators have made harassing remarks by using the word “gay” in an insulting and insensitive manner. School officials have also censored the Gay Straight Alliance’s flyers and announcements and rejected its campaign to discuss homophobia and bullying. Although students have submitted written and verbal complaints about the harassment and unfair treatment, Sultana’s administrators have ignored them all. This is unacceptable, as schools should be promoting equality and providing a welcome for all students.
I would like to encourage you to implement a harassment-prevention program at Sultana High School and demand that the teachers and administrators cease making discriminatory comments immediately. Teachers should not be spreading messages of hate and intolerance, and the Gay Straight Alliance should receive equal treatment as other clubs. Please take a stand for the student victims and take action against LGBT harassment.
