End Dairy Cow Tail-Docking in Colorado

Target: Colorado Representatives

Goal: For dairy farms to end the practice of amputating the tails of cows

Despite being condemned by the American Veterinary Medical Association, there are still a handful of dairy farms in Colorado that continue to dock the tails of their dairy cows. There is an increasing amount of support from the public and animal activists to end the practice of tail-docking, but unfortunately, the cruel act continues to occur. Speak out against this barbaric practice so that dairy cows no longer have to suffer.

Docking cow tails was thought to control the amount of dirt and mud that gets onto cow udders, but has never been proven to actually help. The act of tail-docking is a partial amputation of at least two-thirds of a cow’s tail. Pain medication is not administered during this practice, so the cows are completely aware of their pain. The docking does not offer any benefits to the cows and they are simply left with an increase of fly attacks, pain and distress.

Since tail-docking offers absolutely no benefit to the cow or to the dairy farm, there is no need to continue the practice. The cow ends up permanently scarred and in excruciating pain for no reason at all. We need to have this practice banned on Colorado’s dairy farms so that our cows won’t have to suffer any more. Sign the petition below to urge Colorado to outlaw this practice.

Dear Colorado Representatives,

There are a handful of dairy farms in your state that still practice the barbaric act of tail-docking cows. The mutilating of a cow’s tail doesn’t provide any benefits to the cow or to the dairy farm. The cows are simply left in excruciating pain for no reason.

The tail-docking occurs without administering antibiotics or anesthesia to the cows. They are left to suffer through the agony of the amputation without any concerns of their safety. Cows end up with severe distress and an increase of fly attacks. This is a barbaric act that just leads to more suffering for the cows.

Dairy representatives and the American Veterinary Medical Association have outspokenly opposed the act of tail-docking and it is also outlawed in several other countries. It is time we do something about the practice in the United States, and your state is the best place to start. Please act to end tail-docking and stop the torturing of dairy cows.

  1. Irene Lloyd-Wide says:

What is it with some people, dogs, horses, cows and other animals have tails as part of their spine and should be left alone. If the farmers feel that the tails mess the udders there’s one solution, HAND WASH THE UDDERS as many farmers do in SCOTLAND, we don’t cut tails off they are left where they belong on every lovely cow, stop this very painful amputation on animals.

  2. Why do they cut the tails off the cows for? It has no

benefits what so ever. But it makes it worse for the cows.

They have to deal with the flies and other insects, when they need to itch,

and everything that else that they need their tails for.

How would the people feel if they get their hands or

finger cut off. I don’t think they would feel pleasure

but a lot of pain. You have to think how would you feel before you do it

    some people are cold blooded.
