Target: Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine
Goal: Thank the Attorney General for taking threats against the victim of rape seriously
The recent conviction of two teenagers who raped a girl at a party in Steubenville, Ohio has elicited a variety of reactions, none as disturbing as threats made against the 16-year-old rape victim by two teenage girls of Steubenville. On Twitter, the pair threatened to assault the victim, and defamed her character.
Victim blaming is bad enough—and there was plenty of it in the Steubenville rape case. The victim was originally dismissed because she was drunk, and after the case began to get attention nationally, she was written off because of her allegedly bad character. These hugely problematic issues thankfully led to a backlash nationwide and increased demands to see justice done in Steubenville.
So when the trial was over and both perpetrators were found guilty and sentenced to serve time in a juvenile detention center, many celebrated that at least justice had been done this once for a victim of rape. But the perpetrators were popular football players in a town that values high school football over almost everything else. And so, even as CNN broke the story of their sentencing by sympathizing with the rapists rather than the victim of rape, the reaction locally contained continued defense of the rapists, despite a conclusive conviction in a court of law.
In this context, threats made by the victim’s peers are to be taken seriously, and indeed they were. The Attorney General of Ohio, Mike DeWine, was quoted as saying that “threatening a teenage rape victim will not be tolerated.”
In a situation fraught with so many grave problems, it is refreshing to see the authorities responding in an appropriate way. Sign the petition below to thank the Attorney General for using the law to protect the weak and see justice done.
Dear Attorney General Mike DeWine,
I am writing to thank you for your prompt and totally appropriate action to arrest the two teenage girls who threatened the 16-year-old Steubenville rape victim. In such a charged atmosphere and in a town that has so often seemed to side with convicted rapists, threats of the nature made by these two are serious.
It is refreshing that you are taken them seriously, as you well should. Not only is rape no joke, threatening the victim of rape is no joke. Thank you for doing your job and doing it well.
