Tell Restaurant to Take a Stand Against Dehorning

Target: G. J. Hart, CEO of California Pizza Kitchen

Goal: Tell California Pizza Kitchen to stop working with suppliers who dehorn cows.

Did you know that almost every cow bred for milk production will develop horns? Did you know that many of these cows are cruelly burned or mutilated to prevent their horns from growing? Dehorning is an inhumane, painful procedure in which some dairy cows are burned with “searing-hot irons [or] caustic chemicals,” while others have their horns literally hacked off by “blades or hand saws.” Despite this horrible treatment, California Pizza Kitchen has refused to take a stand against dehorning with the dairy farms that supply it with cheese. Tell the restaurant to do the right thing and take immediate steps forcing its suppliers to phase out dehorning.

The continuation of this barbaric practice is all the more frustrating when there is an easy fix: “polled” cows are naturally hornless. Since “a single gene determines whether or not a cow will have horns,” it is a fairly simple matter to breed cows that never have horns to begin with. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) reports that polled cows have “proven effective in the beef industry,” but California Pizza Kitchen, despite knowledge of this fact, has still declined to take a stand.

The restaurant depends on customers like you for its livelihood. Tell California Pizza Kitchen that you, as a customer, take issue with its unnecessarily cruel stance on dehorning. Sign the petition and demand that California Pizza Kitchen phase out this inhumane practice in favor of a simple, humane solution.

Dear Mr. Hart,

In a restaurant like California Pizza Kitchen, top-notch cheese and other dairy products are obviously of great importance. As a result, it’s easy to understand why the restaurant is picky about its suppliers and the products they provide. What is more difficult to understand, however, is why California Pizza Kitchen refuses to take a stand against dehorning, a destructive and unnecessary process.

Cows are dehorned either by being burned with irons or chemicals or by having their horns literally hacked off. This cruel practice is entirely unnecessary given the fact that it is fairly easy to breed cows with no horns at all. The fact that California Pizza Kitchen has not already agreed to phase out dehorning is puzzling at best, downright disturbing at worst.

Please take a stand for the humane treatment of all animals. Take immediate steps to phase out dehorning among California Pizza Kitchen’s suppliers and replace it with a cruelty-free alternative.

  1. “We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living beings, humanity will not find peace.” – Albert Schweitzer

Just horrendous that we should treat any living, feeling being this way, including ourselves.
