Target: Pranab Kumar Mukherjee, President of India
Goal: To convict and punish the group of men who raped and assaulted the Swiss cycling couple in India.
A Swiss couple cycling through India decided to set up camp for the night in a Madhya Pradesh forest. A group of men beat the couple and gang-raped the 39-year-old woman, then stole their cell phone and laptop computer. We must demand justice for the Swiss cycling couple and punish the criminals who carried out these unthinkable acts.
Although the Indian government has sent police on searches to find the thieves and rapists, no one has been convicted of this crime. Thirteen men were initially detained and questioned. Six of those men were released after questioning and no further details have been made public.
Unfortunately, this is no isolated incident. The number of rapes and sexual assaults has been drastically increasing in recent months. The people of India have been outraged and even staged protests against attacks on women since last December’s fatal gang rape of a woman riding a bus in New Delhi. In that tragic incident, one of the six suspects was found hanged in jail and the others remain on trial for the attack.
The Swiss government issued a notice last month about the increased risk of rape and assault while traveling to the country. Swiss foreign ministry spokesman Tilman Renz stated that the diplomats called on Indian authorities “to do everything to quickly find the perpetrators so that they can be held accountable.”

Dear President Mukherjee,
More and more, Indian residents and tourists from other countries have suffered as victims of rape in your country. These assaults are becoming more common and something must be done. The recent incidents of the New Delhi bus rider and the Swiss cyclist are just two of the horrific violations that are frequently taking place.
I am urging you to support legislation that protects men and women from rape and sexual assault. We must teach rapists and thieves a lesson and remind potential perpetrators that this is not acceptable and that they will be punished for their despicable wrongdoings.
