Target: Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education
Goal: Guarantee at least 30 minutes of recess for all public kindergartens and elementary schools around the country.
Budget cuts in public schools have been rampant in recent years. Music programs, art classes, and physical education are quickly being put to the wayside. But with so many of the creative and social outlets for children in public school being abandoned, recess is incredibly important. Not only does fun free time allow children to socialize, but it also creates active and healthy habits. Quite simply, taking time out of our children’s recess to prepare for standardized testing is depriving young Americans the chance to enjoy their childhood and develop healthy social and emotional tendencies.
In addition, studies have shown that people who were unable to play as children are more likely to be violent and demonstrate significant behavioral problems. Though education is absolutely paramount in the development of young children, active playtime is just as important.
Even in the face of huge educational budget cuts, there is absolutely no reason to cut recess, as it is entirely free. Young children should have 30 or 45 minutes a day to play with and make friends at school while letting their imaginations run wild. This simple allowance provides young kids with time to refocus their minds for class, expel some excess energy, develop good social habits, and stay fit.
Please sign this petition and help this country’s children have a healthy, active, and fun childhood.
Dear Mr. Duncan,
With widespread budget cuts across public education, a number of active and creative outlets for young children have been removed from their educational curriculum. Music, art, and physical education are very important to the development of young children, but these programs have been cut from many schools. Recess, on the other hand, is completely free and can offer great value to one’s childhood.
During this short break, children develop social habits while making new friends, learn active tendencies while playing games, and are able to expel their pent-up energy allowing them to refocus their minds for class.
In addition, studies have shown that children whom are not given the opportunity to play while in their adolescence, are more likely to be violent or show serious behavioral problems.
Please guarantee at least 30 minutes of recess in all public kindergartens and elementary schools around country, and give our future the childhood they deserve.
