Investigate Shooting of Refugee Boat by Thai Navy

Target: Thailand President Shinawatra

Goal: Investigate the shooting of a refugee shipping vessel by Thai Navy

In February 2013, a group of Thai navy sailors shot off more than a dozen rounds at a boat containing approximately 130 individuals who were in the midst of seeking asylum. The passengers were sailing from Burma to Malaysia when their boat ran out of fuel and these navy sailors opened fire. So far, two dead bodies have been recovered from the water; however, many of the passengers seeking asylum reported that they had seen more dead among them. The investigation is currently non-existent.

The members of the boat that was fired upon consisted largely of Rohingya peoples seeking refuge from the persecution they face in Burma. President Shinawatra of Thailand has tried to promote a safe passage for these individuals who are simply trying to escape tyranny. In this instance, the system has greatly failed.

Not only do we not know how many people died, but why the ship was fired upon in the first place remains unclear. If President Shinawatra truly wants restitution for the Rohingya, then she needs to allocate enough resources towards the investigation of this shooting. If these naval officers used excessive force, then they should be prosecuted for their actions. Certainly, the death and trauma caused by this incident is enough to warrant some form of governmental intervention.

The Rohingya were merely attempting to move to an area where they would face less persecution and harassment. Unfortunately for this small group of refugees, they sailed into something far worse than what they were escaping from. People died because of the actions of these naval officers. An investigation is absolutely necessary in order to uncover the truth of the situation and apply swift justice.

Sign below to let President Shinawatra know that she needs to allot enough resources towards a transparent and in-depth investigation of the shooting.

Dear President Shinawatra,

On February 22, 2013, Thai naval officers fired upon a group of over a hundred Rohingya refugees. So far, two individuals have been found dead, but many of the facts remain uncovered. These individuals were seeking asylum from a tyrannical Burmese government. We know that you have stated your support for the plight of the Rohingya; however, you need to use this situation to set a clear example of this support.

The event in question needs to be investigated in order to fully realize what went wrong, and why a group of naval sailors felt the need to fire upon the boat of unarmed refugees. Surely a court is needed for sentencing, but it would appear as though these naval officials used unnecessary force. Whether this is or isn’t so, the event warrants an investigation so that all the facts may be fully realized and actions to prevent future events such as these can be taken.
