Target: The National Rifle Association
Goal: Condemn the NRA for insensitivity towards Newtown massacre victims and their families
In light of the horrific killing spree that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the NRA summoned gun-owners to lobby at the state’s capital against gun control measures. Hundreds of people showed up less than an hour away from the site of the massacre to protest tough local gun controls that have passed into law or will be passed soon. Condemn NRA members for their egregiously insensitive and disrespectful choice of location and demand that they apologize to the Newtown residents.
There is no doubt that the Newtown massacre is among one of the most despicable instances of gun violence in the recent history of the United States. Twenty children and six adults were murdered, leaving the town and the nation torn. The call for stricter gun law has been a long time coming. Gun violence is a devastating problem in North America—since 1980, a total of 297 people have been killed during school shootings. So why does the NRA insist upon protesting in such an offensive manner that completely disregards both the victims of gun violence and their loved ones?
The NRA has every right to protest new laws, but there is no reason that they must do so in such a morally inept way. Given that the lobbying occurred on a weekday, parents of the Sandy Hook victims most likely passed lobbyists as they commuted to Hartford – CNN notes that Newtown residents often travel to Hartford to work. NRA members waved signs reading “Stand and Fight”, “Feels Like Nazi Germany”, and “Dictators Prefer Unarmed Citizens”. They also burned an effigy of Connecticut’s governor Dannel Malloy. Though nothing they were doing is illegal, the NRA’s choice of location was utterly disrespectful. Condemn them for their grossly insensitive actions and ask them to apologize to Newtown residents.
Dear National Rifle Association,
Your recent gun lobbying in Hartford, Connecticut was cruel and insensitive. While we respect your right to protest, the location in which you choose to do so showed extreme levels of disrespect towards the victims and families affected by the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary. Hartford is less than an hour’s drive away from the elementary school, and many Newtown parents commute into the capital for their jobs. You are spitting on the memory of their children or their friends’ children by choosing to protest so close to the site of the tragedy.
Please refrain from protesting close to sites that have been affected by such horrific instances of gun violence. In addition, we ask that you issue a formal apology to Newtown residents.
