Target: Minnesota House and Senate members
Goal: Legalize same-sex marriage in Minnesota
A bill that would grant same-sex couples marriage rights in Minnesota has been passed by required committees in the House and Senate and will soon be up for floor votes in both of the chambers. If approved, Minnesota would be the tenth state, in addition to the District of Columbia, that recognizes same-sex marriage. Gays and lesbians do not deserve to be treated as second-class citizens—they deserve the right to marry the person they love just as much as straight individuals do. Stand up for equal rights today. Urge members of the Minnesota House and Senate to vote in favor of marriage equality.
The proposal of the gay marriage bill comes after Minnesota voters denied an amendment to the state’s constitution which would have defined marriage as solely between a man and a woman. Currently, gay marriage is still illegal in Minnesota, but Governor Mark Dayton has pledged that he will sign a bill in favor of same-sex marriage if it reaches his desk. Both Democrats and some Republicans are in favor of such a bill. Most notable, perhaps, was former Republican state Representative Lynne Osterman’s statement. Osterman, who voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibited gay marriage, lamented: “I blew my vote, and I implore you please get this right”, adding that the decision still haunts her today. Scott Dibble (D-Minnesota), who married his husband in California, said in a letter to his fellow senators that by expanding marriage to all, “freedom itself is expanded”.
Minnesota lawmakers have the chance to be on the right side of history—the side that supports the right to marry the person you love, no matter your sexual orientation. By passing a bill that allows same-sex couples to get married, they will further push the nation away from the Defense of Marriage Act and towards fair and equal rights. Urge members of both the House and Senate to vote in favor of marriage equality when the bill reaches the floor.
Dear Minnesota House and Senate Members,
Recently, House and Senate committees approved a gay marriage bill that is now going to head to both floors for a vote. An approval of this bill would allow same-sex couples to legally marry in the state of Minnesota. Currently, marriages in Minnesota are confined to being between a man and a woman.
Passing this bill would make Minnesota the tenth state to legalize gay marriage and push the state to the the forefront of the equal rights movement. Gays and lesbians deserve the right to marry the person they love just as much as straight individuals do. Be on the right side of history—please vote “Yes” in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage.
