Target: Chuck Hagel, United States Secretary of Defense
Goal: Thank military leaders for using solar power for their energy needs
SolarCity, a national provider of clean energy services, will provide power for nearly 5,000 military homes in Fort Bliss, Texas. The solar project will also include the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The US Army has promised to use 25% renewable energy for all of its projects by 2025. To date, this is the largest solar project undertaken by the Army. According to Major General Pittard, “The solar project will pay for itself through the installation’s reduced utility bills.”
This is all part of a $1 billion initiative called SolarStrong, which will provide solar power to 120,000 military homes by 2018. At its completion, SolarStrong will be the largest solar housing project in US history. The plan has been in the works for the last three years, and SolarCity leaders hope the initiative will create thousands of jobs for veterans and military families. Supporters of the project hope the money saved on utility costs can be diverted into updates and improvements in military housing communities.
The Department of Defense is the largest energy consumer in the nation. Energy consumption amongst military personnel, including those on active duty, is 35% higher than that of the average civilian. This being the case, efforts to use renewable energy are particularly important within the US military. Applaud efforts to install solar panels on military housing, and encourage the Defense Department to continue its efforts to use renewable energy sources for its power needs.
Dear Chuck Hagel,
The US military recently teamed up with SolarCity to begin an ambitious solar project in a military housing community in Fort Bliss, Texas. This solar initiative will also extend to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. This is only the first step in a much larger SolarStrong initiative to provide solar power for 120,000 military homes in the next five years. This is set to be the largest solar housing project in US history.
The Department of Defense is the largest energy consumer in the United States. Military personnel use 35% more energy on average than US citizens per capita. The Army’s pledge to use 25% renewable energy for all its power needs is a positive measure that will help the US government greatly reduce its enormous carbon footprint. I commend the Defense Department for initiating this bold solar project with SolarCity, and I ask that you continue to blaze the trail for solar power development in the years to come.
