Target: Chinese legislature
Goal: Stop rainforest destruction by asking China to limit the number of chopstick they use
China is the world’s largest consumer and importer of wood. This is largely due to its large population and the demand for wood to create chopsticks, a popular Chinese eating utensil. While the utensils are a staple in Chinese culture, manufacturing the product is resulting in diminishing forests. Protect trees all over the world by asking China to stop using the chopsticks in such high quantities.
According to Globalpost.com, China’s chopstick production has included over 20 million trees, which is enough to fill Tiananmen Square with 360 layers of the utensils. The demand for wood has tripled since the year 2000, and China’s population can only continue to increase at this point. The country is also getting some of their timber from illegal sources, which puts our forests in jeopardy.
The future of the world’s forests lay in China’s hands at this point. Its population can only increase and the demand for chopsticks will rise with it. Other parts of the world use alternative utensils, and it is time for China to do the same. China must implement other utensils as chopsticks substitutes before it’s too late for our trees. Sign the petition below and urge the country to stop wasting our forests.
Dear Chinese legislature,
Your beautiful culture is one of the most popular in the world. Your influences can be seen from America to England to Australia. While everyone can find something about your culture to love, there is one thing that is hurting our planet. Your production of chopsticks is hurting our forests and could potentially lead to a very big problem.
Your chopstick production has destroyed over 20 million trees, which is enough to fill Tiananmen Square with 360 layers of the utensils. This is an unnecessary and astronomical amount. While the utensil is a staple of your culture, it is not worth the destruction of our very precious rainforests. As your population continues to increase, your demand for chopsticks will also grow. This will cause a significant change to our rainforests, ecosystems and environments.
We are asking you to please limit your chopstick production and seek other options for utensils in the future. The life of our planet could be in jeopardy if your production continues in the amounts that it has been. Please save our forests.
