Encourage Chinese Government to Eliminate Disposable Chopsticks in Restaurants

reusable chopsticks

Target: National People’s Congress

Goal: Save China’s forests by replacing disposable chopsticks with reusable chopsticks in restaurants.

The demand for disposable chopsticks in China is placing a burden on China’s natural forests. Nearly 80 billion disposable chopsticks are produced in China every year. In order to meet this annual production, a total of 20 million 20 year-old trees have to be chopped down every year. The Chinese government must make an effort to protect its national forests by urging citizens to use reusable chopsticks.

Deforestation is an environmental issue that impacts not only humans, but other organisms as well. When large areas of a forest are cleared, wildlife habitats are destroyed and animals become displaced. The removal of trees also causes atmospheric problems. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert this gas into oxygen. Without the presence of trees, the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes global warming. As carbon dioxide accumulates, it produces a layer in the atmosphere that traps radiation and heat from the sun.

Forests are essential to the survival of all organisms. China’s forest coverage is only approximately 20 percent. Therefore it is vital to preserve remaining forests. To prevent further deforestation, the Chinese government should eliminate the use of disposable chopsticks in restaurants. Chinese citizens should be encouraged to bring their own chopsticks and restaurants should be encouraged to provide reusable chopsticks. This change in consumption habits can save millions of trees annually, and lead to a healthier environment. Sign the petition below to urge the Chinese government to eliminate disposable chopstick usage.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear National People’s Congress,

I was shocked to hear that China produces nearly 80 billion disposable chopsticks every year. In order to meet this annual production, a total of 20 million 20 year-old trees have to be chopped down. This mass culling of trees leads to deforestation and other major environmental issues. As you may know, deforestation causes atmospheric problems. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air and convert this gas into oxygen. Without the presence of trees, the excess carbon dioxide accumulates and traps radiation and heat from the sun, causing global warming. The removal of trees also destroys wildlife habitats and displaces endangered species.

It is important to preserve China’s remaining forests. The Chinese government should eliminate the use of disposable chopsticks in an effort to reduce the burden on China’s forests. Chinese citizens should be encouraged to bring their own chopsticks and restaurants should be encouraged to provide reusable chopsticks. This change in consumption habits can save millions of trees and provide a healthier environment. Please consider saving China’s forests by eliminating disposable chopstick usage.

Sincerely,
