Target: Zerlina Maxwell
Goal: Stand in solidarity with Zerlina Maxwell who is being attacked by racist death threats and threatened with rape for statements on the Hannity show.
Zerlina Maxwell, a Democratic strategist, feminist writer and law student appeared as a guest on Sean Hannity’s show to take part in a debate on firearms. At the debate, she said one of the best ways to prevent rape is to train men not to do it and that arming women with firearms wasn’t a solution. Ever since the show, she has received a barrage of racist death threats and rape threats on Facebook, Twitter and by email from men threatening her. Sign the petition to show your support for Maxwell in the face of these terrible attacks.
Maxwell herself is a rape survivor and was emphasizing that the focus should be on the perpetrators of rape. “I think that the entire conversation is wrong. I don’t want anybody to be telling women anything. I don’t want men to be telling me what to wear and how to act, not to drink. And I don’t, honestly, want you to tell me that I needed a gun in order to prevent my rape. In my case, don’t tell me if I’d only had a gun, I wouldn’t have been raped. Don’t put it on me to prevent the rape.” She has now been on the receiving end of repulsive, vile and hateful comments.
Comments include men saying that they hope she gets gang raped, referring to her as a “slut” and using the n-word.
Many of these threats are quite possibly criminal according to both New York state and federal law. These threats serve to illustrate the point that Maxwell was making on the Hannity show. Sign the petition to support Zerlina Maxwell against these hateful comments.
Dear Zerlina Maxwell,
I am writing as a human rights activist to support the comments you made on the Hannity show. The backlash you have received with death threats, rape threats and racist hate mail serves to illustrate the point you were making. A rape culture exists in the United States and women who speak out about it are often coerced with threats of sexual violence. Your experience mirrors that of another law student, Sandra Fluke who was also subject to the same sort of vitriolic hatred. I urge you to report those making these comments to the police since it is quite likely that many of the statements are criminal in nature.
I stand with you in the face of these threats. I hope that this incident can serve as the start of a social movement that changes the perception of rape in this country. Please do not be deterred because of these hateful comments and continue to speak out. I believe we are reaching the tipping point of great change. Thank you.
