Condemn New York City Mayor Bloomberg for Trivializing Homeless Problem

Target: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg

Goal: Condemn Bloomberg for statements trivializing New York’s homeless problem and blaming the Coalition for the Homeless and state government.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a statement where he spread blame for NYC’s growing homeless problem. Refusing to acknowledge that growing income inequality in the city combined with high unemployment was the result of the increase, Bloomberg instead blamed the Coalition for the Homeless and the state government for passing a law that required the city to provide shelter for the homeless. He said the system was being taken advantage of by playboy millionaires. Sign the petition to condemn Bloomberg’s statements.

50,000 people used homeless shelters nightly in January 2013, an increase of 61% since Bloomberg took office. This includes 21,034 children, or 1% of all children in NYC. The most absurd part of Bloomberg’s statement was, “You can arrive in your private jet at Kennedy Airport, take a private limousine and go straight to the shelter system and walk in the door and we’ve got to give you shelter.” Bloomberg was making a reference to a law passed in 1981 by the state government, supported by the Coalition of the Homeless, which requires the city to provide shelter for the homeless. Bloomberg, himself the 13th richest man in the world, believes that playboy millionaires are coming to New York to take advantage of the free homeless shelters. Bloomberg asked New Yorkers to strike down the 1981 law because the city, “just cannot go subsidize everybody’s rent” and “we ain’t gonna do this anymore.” Bloomberg’s callous statements reveal a stunning ignorance of the homeless problem in NYC.

Bloomberg has refused to take any responsibility for his policies contributing to increased homelessness and failing to help the homeless. In fact, he refused federal money to help move homeless families into public housing. He has continually attempted to demonize the Coalition of the Homeless. Sign the petition to condemn Bloomberg’s absurd statements about the homeless.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,

I am writing as a citizen to condemn statements in which you trivialized the homeless problem in New York City and failed to take responsibility for policies that have exacerbated it. You issued an absurd and nonsensical statement that “playboy millionaires” were taking advantage of the homeless shelters and burdening the New York taxpayer. You blamed the state government for a 1981 law that requires the city to provide shelters and you accused the Coalition of the Homeless for engaging in self-aggrandizement.

You have continually displayed a callous disregard and ignorance of the scope of the homeless problem in NYC. Over the course of your 12-year mayoralty, homelessness in New York City has increased by 61%. This number does not include those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy or other natural disasters since they are provided with separate housing. 1 out of 100 NYC children have used homeless shelters; a total of 50,000 used shelters nightly by January of 2013.

I ask that you cease blaming the Coalition of the Homeless and state government and acknowledge that your policies have contributed to the situation.

Sincerely,
