Encourage Colorado Legislature to Further Advance Gun Control Measures

Target: Colorado governor John Hickenlooper

Goal: Encourage the Colorado government to further advance legislation that will create stricter gun control laws.

A package of gun control measures has advanced through the Colorado state government and is headed to the Senate, where it will be voted on and then pushed to governor John Hickenlooper’s office for either a signature or veto. This package of gun control measures would greatly help public safety in the state of Colorado. The state government should therefore do everything in its power to get the measures ratified. Encourage lawmakers to do what is best for their state and keep their full support behind the measures.

Items covered in the package include heightened emphasis on background checks for firearm purchases (as well as requiring buyers to pay for the checks themselves), as well as a ban on firearm purchases among buyers with domestic violence convictions on their criminal record and a ban of online certification of permits allowing concealed carry. These measures are aimed at increasing people’s safety in the state of Colorado by only allowing guns to be purchased and owned by those who are more assured to use them responsibly, and not in such a way that would compromise the safety and well-being of others.

These measures need to be passed by the state not only for its own safety but for the safety of other states as well; if Colorado sets an example with the passage of these measures, it is only a matter of time before other states follow its lead and come up with increased safety plans themselves. The government should be encouraged to push this legislation through.

Dear Governor Hickenlooper,

Your government has taken a strong step toward increasing public safety in your state with the advancement of the package of gun control measures. Now comes the most important part.

Following the Senate vote, you will have an option to sign or veto this package of measures. Given how much good the passage of them could do, it is your ethical obligation to sign them and support them in any way that you can. Your state needs your aid right now.

In fact, as important as this package of measures will be for your state, it will be arguably more influential for the rest of the country. If Colorado establishes gun control measures such as these, it could inspire other states to do the same, and start a widespread movement that will increase public safety nationwide. You have the power to make this happen; ensure that it does.

  1. There’s really no reason not to have background checks for firearm purchases. Isn’t it only logical to make sure that anyone who owns a dangerous firearm is mentally able to handle the consequences of owning one?
