Target: Actress Ashley Judd
Goal: Thank Ashley Judd for speaking out politically about sexual violence and support the possibility of her running for Senate against Republican Mitch McConnell.
Ashley Judd has been an interesting and outspoken figure in feminist activism. She has gone on record as saying: “I’d like to propose that the society in which we live is, in fact, extremist and radical. It is so skewed, massively out of balance; the result of one sex ruling and objectifying another for at least the last millennia.” Judd is aware that such candid honesty about the world might not go over well with the voters of Kentucky and has admitted that her words might disqualify her from the chance of winning elections, but she still speaks the truth to power in spite of the risks to her popularity.
Among other things, Judd has been forthright about the fact that she is a three-time rape survivor. She has spoken frankly about reproductive healthcare, violence in the Congo, child prostitution, and other important cornerstones of feminism. Furthermore, there’s a chance Ashley Judd might be running for a Senate position against Republican (and Senate minority leader) Mitch McConnell. She has said she’s “certainly taking a close look” at running.
While there’s certainly no guarantee that Judd would win against the longtime politician McConnell, if Ashley Judd were to unseat McConnell, the ramifications for progress would be massive. Mitch McConnell has been by far the single most visible icon of obstructionist practices in the Senate, leading filibusters of one bill after another, while also going on record as famously saying, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
Ashley Judd, with her outspoken activism and progressive values, might help in fostering a much less obstructionist Senate. Sign this petition to thank her for the work she has done and to support her if she does choose to run for Senate.
Dear Ashley Judd,
I am writing to thank you for all of the work you have done in educating people about reproductive healthcare, mountaintop removal coal mining, rape and sexual violence, and other important topics pertaining to feminism and to the environment. Although you admit that your views might not be popular and might not go over well with the public, I believe you are speaking about truths that many people simply do not want to hear, and I admire your honesty in doing that. Sometimes, it is important to unsettle people from complacency with the decisions made by government officials and others in power.
If you decide to run for Senate, I wish you the best of luck, and I will support your success. Unseating the obstructionist Mitch McConell would be wonderful for the success of progressive democracy, but in addition to that, I know you would be a strong advocate for important reforms in Congress and politics. Thank you for all of your efforts in activism, and good luck with your future endeavors in speaking candidly to people about gendered violence and environmental destruction.
