Target: Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York
Goal: Thank Mayor Bloomberg for advocating for reasonable gun legislation, such as upholding background check laws.
Mayors Against Illegal Guns is launching a $12 million ad campaign to promote universal background checks on gun sales. Currently, of all of the proposed gun control legislation, the measure which is supported by more Americans than any other is the measure towards comprehensive background checks. As current laws stand, private gun sales have a loophole in which private dealers can sell guns to people without the purchasers passing through a criminal background check. Most of the American public favors closing this loophole, but opposition to such meaningful change has come in the form of the NRA and its leader, Wayne LaPierre.
Mayor Bloomberg has said of his ad campaign, “These ads bring the voices of Americans – who overwhelmingly support comprehensive and enforceable background checks – into the discussion to move senators to immediately take action to prevent gun violence.” He is right that the polls show that most Americans do overwhelmingly support comprehensive background checks. The ads stress that these sensible regulations on gun ownership are not the same as “taking away” people’s guns.
Perhaps the most poignant line in the ads is “with rights come responsibilities.” Estimates from a 2011 FBI study suggest 6.6 million firearms (at least) are sold without background checks every year. Bloomberg’s ads will air in 13 states, and already, members of the NRA have become furious with Bloomberg’s support of useful gun control measures. Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with Mayor Bloomberg and support comprehensive background checks.
Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
I am writing to you concerning your Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign. Thank you for running this ad campaign. It is my hope that these ads will assist in re-framing the debates on background checks in the minds of many Americans. When polled, many Americans, as you are aware, show support for comprehensive background checks. However, the NRA has done much to demonize even the most reasonable measures that would keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
I especially like the “with rights come responsibilities” line. I believe this way of framing the issue will be useful, as Americans will realize that background checks do not remove rights so much as they focus on the responsibilities that come with those rights; taking legislative action so that guns do not fall into criminal hands is highly significant and important. Thank you for taking a stand against the NRA.
