Target: The New South Wales Police Force
Goal: Hold Sydney police responsible for violence and discrimination against members of the gay community
Australian police need to be convicted of police brutality. During a Mardi Gras event catered towards Australia’s gay population Sydney police assaulted Jamie Jackson, making the case that his “offensive language” was cause for arrest. The suspected officers cuffed Jackson and then promptly threw him to the ground, cracking his skull and causing him to bleed onto the concrete.
Onlookers were terrified – many were crying and asserting that Jackson had been assaulted far before cameras were able to catch the first bits of evidence. Police continually insisted that everyone stop filming, but couldn’t provide any concrete evidence as to why, leaving many to believe these officers were simply trying to cover up their abuse of power.
Several other gay men accounted similar attacks – all were victimized because of their sexual orientation. One man reported that he was assaulted by a group of plain clothes police officers outside when he simply popped a piece of chewing gum into his mouth. The victim stated that he was grabbed by the neck, slammed against a wall, and held there for at least a minute. When he was let go, he was arrested on the pretense of drug consumption. Bryn Hutchinson, co-founder of Community Action Against Homophobia has reported that he was violently assaulted by police when he crossed a street he was warned not to.
Sydney police are cruelly and deliberately targeting the gay community. They disrupt peaceful celebrations and commit brutal and senseless acts against individuals involved in the recognition of gay pride and gay rights.
Do not let Sydney police get away with acts of violence and discrimination directed towards the gay minority. Demand that officers guilty of police brutality targeting the gay population be held responsible for their actions.
Dear New South Wales Police Force,
Your acts of violence towards the gay community will not be tolerated. Your actions towards openly gay individuals during gay Mardi Gras was not only intolerable, but also an example of your discriminatory tendencies and proclivity towards an excessive use of force.
The brutality encountered by gay citizens is not only disturbing but also a clear violation of human rights. The police exist to serve and protect everyone in the community, not to target and single out individuals for violent assault. Preserve your integrity as officers and give the gay community the respect they deserve. Admit your wrongdoings to the public.
