Target: Montgomery Parks Police Chief Antonio DeVaul
Goal: Ensure that any attempts to control the deer population in Montgomery County Park, Maryland are humane.
On a recent trip to Montgomery County Park in Maryland, a hiker hoping to photograph the park’s wildlife came upon a horrifying sight: a living, suffering doe with her jaw ripped open. The deer was the victim of Montgomery County Park’s deer population control plan, which involves police sharpshooters taking out unsuspecting deer. The program’s disregard for the lives and suffering of the park’s deer is unacceptable. Sign the petition and demand that Montgomery County Park drop its current plan and replace it with a more humane alternative.
In a space like Montgomery County Park, it is inevitable that there must be some effort to keep wildlife populations under control. However, bringing in police sharpshooters to kill unsuspecting deer who are simply living normal lives in their natural environment is not only inhumane but also dangerous to people who may be caught unawares. The are a number of less violent methods of controlling deer populations, and it is of paramount importance to both the deer and the people in Montgomery County Park that an alternative method of population control is sought as soon as possible. Sign the petition urging an immediate end to the park’s current program and encouraging the adoption of a humane alternative plan.
Dear Chief DeVaul,
One of the many purposes of a park like Montgomery County Park is to provide a space for local residents to appreciate and learn more about nature and wildlife. However, this noble pursuit went horribly awry when Montgomery County Park initiated its deer population control program, which involves police sharpshooters taking down the deer who make Montgomery County Park their home. There are far more humane methods of controlling the deer population, and I urge you to drop the program as it stands now and adopt an alternative plan that respects the lives of all the creatures within Montgomery County Park.
The program’s misguidedness was particularly and shockingly evident in some recent photos taken by a park visitor. In the photos, a living doe stands with one side of her jaw blown away by a police bullet. This lack of respect for a wild animal’s life and its suffering is unacceptable. Do not allow further sad tales like this one to occur. Please adopt a new plan that will humanely address the issue of deer overpopulation.
