Encourage Colorado Legislature to Enforce Concealed Carry Ban on College Campuses

Target: Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper

Goal: Enact concealed carry ban in Colorado in order to prevent more weapons from reaching college campuses.

The state of Colorado is considering enforcing a ban on concealed weapons on its college campuses. This ruling would effectively reverse the Supreme Court’s 2012 decision that essentially required campuses to accommodate students with such permits. However, the state legislature is doing the right thing here, given that banning concealed firearms (or, basically, doing anything possible to limit firearms) on campuses will greatly increase public safety on campus. Therefore, the Colorado legislators responsible for encouraging this decision deserve to be commended, and the legislation needs to be passed as quickly as possible.

The main opposition to this bill seems to come either from those who are gun owners (who will naturally be in opposition) or those who believe that passing such a law would not have much of an effect (given that campuses have many potential entrances and exits and checking people is difficult). However, these people are missing the point; it’s about keeping guns and firearms off campuses completely, and limiting any and all student and faculty exposure to such dangerous weapons. Eliminating concealed carry firearms is, essentially, eliminating firearms, which is a necessity for campus public safety.

Twenty-one states have already instituted concealed carry bans on college campuses. The majority of the major Colorado university systems approve the passage of the bill. In essence, there is really no reason for this legislation not to go into effect, and the Colorado legislature responsible for its approval should make it a top priority.

Dear Governor Hickenlooper,

Your state is currently considering passing legislature that will eliminate concealed carry on college campuses. For the sake of public safety, you must ensure that this legislation is passed.

Many have come out in opposition of the proposed legislation, with most citing that it wouldn’t make much of a difference. However, these people are missing the point; it’s about keeping firearms as far away from campuses as possible. This concealed carry ban would help greatly in that regard.

You and your fellow politicians must do whatever you can to ensure that guns are as far removed from college campuses as possible; it’s your right, as an elected official, to make public safety a high priority if not the highest priority. Enforcing this ban would therefore mean following through on your job responsibilities…and your ethical responsibilities as well. Make sure this ban gets enforced.

  1. I know this will be an unpopular statement on this site, but you realize that the people who perpetrated the mass shootings all looked for places where concealed carry wasn’t allowed, right? By eliminating campus carry, you’re leaving the students and faculty open for violence. Just sayin’. Wouldn’t it be better to have people who have been trained in concealed carry around? Guns don’t hurt people. People hurt people.

  2. I’ve made it known many times throughout my postings on this site: my stance is that guns need to be kept far away from schools, and that that’s simply common sense.

    • Common sense isn’t…Because common sense states that people need to be able to protect themselves EVERYWHERE. Just ask the people in the Aurora theater how banning concealed carry worked out for them…
