Target: President Obama
Goal: Condemn advocacy group Organizing for Action for unethical fundraising tactics
Organizing for Action is President Obama’s former campaign arm. It has been transformed into a nonprofit advocacy group with no relation to the President. It was discovered that OFA has been promising that donors who pay $500,000 or more to the group will be allowed face time with President Obama and receive a board position. Sign the petition to condemn OFA for selling access to President Obama.
The group is attempting to raise $50 million; to reach its fundraising goals the group tempted donors with access to the President himself. Donors who donated $500,000 or more were promised appointment to the national advisory board. They would be able to attend quarterly meetings with President Obama and other events at the White House. OFA’s promise is the epitome of corrupt pay-to-play politics. The action has sparked criticism from Russ Feingold, a strong advocate of campaign finance reform, former Senator and founder of Progressives United. Progressives United has pointed out OFA’s hypocrisy, “It’s embarrassing that the largest grassroots organization in history would abandon its own beliefs.”
When questioned about the unethical and possibly illegal promises by OFA the White House Press Secretary Jay Carney dodged the issue. OFA has also denied the claim that it was attempting to sell access. Sign the petition to condemn OFA for unethical fundraising practices and ask President Obama to hold himself accountable.
Dear President Obama,
I am a citizen writing to condemn your former campaign arm, Organizing for Action, for selling access to you. You claim to be a strong supporter of campaign finance reform and you have criticized the Citizens United ruling in the past. It is hypocritical for you to allow OFA to engage in pay-to-play politics. Democracy should not be bought and sold to the highest bidder. While to some extent your hands are tied because of the Supreme Court ruling, you should not be resorting to soft money and high value donors.
I urge you to address these statements by OFA and make clear that democracy is not for sale.
