Goal: Applaud Mr. Persson for collaborating with the World Wildlife Fund [WWF] to create new water conservation tactics
The fashion retailer company, H&M, is partnering with the World Wildlife Fund to create new conservation strategies that will minimize the company’s water impacts. By doing so, the company hopes to incite positive changes to conserve water in China and Bangladesh river basins during the extensive production of garments. Praise Karl-Johan Persson, CEO of H&M, for devising new methods of water conservation to implement into the workings of the company.
In 2012, a comprehensive evaluation was performed to analyze all of H&M’s past and present challenges and endeavors, all of which related to water usage. The assessment focused on processes associated with washing and dying of fibers, as well as agricultural production. The new water conservation methods are to then be based on the thorough review of all aspects of the company’s production processes.
According to World Wildlife Fund’s 2012 Living Planet Report, about 2.7 billion people currently reside on river basins that are susceptible to intense water scarcity for at least one month out of the year. Roughly a third of the factories that produce H&M clothing are already situated in areas that experience severe water shortages.
Over the next three years, the World Wildlife Fund plans to work with H&M to successfully apply the new water conservation plans. Mr. Persson explains how proud the company is to be partnering with WWF, stating that they are fully committed to ensuring that water is used responsibly in order to protect the environment and secure availability of water for generations to come.
