Thank Clint Eastwood for Supporting Gay Marriage

Target: Clint Eastwood

Goal: Applaud Clint Eastwood’s for his support of marriage equality

Famous actor and director Clint Eastwood surprised the world with his comments supporting same-sex marriage in a 2011 GQ interview, and has just fortified his position on the subject by opposing California’s ban on gay marriage. Thank him for his support, and for lending his influence to the fight for marriage equality.

In a 2011 interview, Eastwood was quoted saying, “Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want.”  Walking the talk, Eastwood has recently joined a large number of conservatives in signing the amici curiae. The amici curiae – or “friends of the court” brief – is a document in opposition of California’s Proposition 8 that banned gay marriage in the state. The brief argues that “marriage is strengthened, not undermined” by allowing same-sex couples to legally wed. It has now been signed by over 100 conservatives, making it a big influence on Republican consensus.

As a cultural icon, Eastwood’s signing of the amici curiae lends a great deal of visibility to the document and what it stands for. For a man whom many would consider to be a conservative, ruggedly individual American, his support of gay marriage blazes a trail of acceptance through the dense underbrush of this demographic.

If marriage equality is going to take hold in our country, support must come from all sides. Proponents in the Republican party are important, but backing from big names like Eastwood’s provide the all-important increase in popularity and overall acceptance it will take to get same-sex marriages legalized across the nation. Sign this petition and thank Clint Eastwood for his public support for gay marriage.

Dear Clint Eastwood,

The United States functions as a whole on many levels, but is divided on the subject of gay marriage. Recently, you have acted in accordance with re-uniting the country on this issue and for this, you deserve thanks and respect.

Freedom has from the beginning been a keystone of the American way, and American citizens deserve the freedom to pursue happiness in whatever marriage they desire. In our country’s struggle for marriage equality, positive action from influential figures like yourself will lead us to victory. Your supportive comments and your signature on the amici curiae are invaluable tokens of goodwill. I appreciate your accepting nature, and thank you for publically supporting gay marriage.
