Commend Fraternity Brothers for Helping Transgender Member

Target: Phi Alpha Tau Fraternity at Emerson College

Goal: Commend the fraternity for helping transgender member get the financial means for gender altering surgeries.

The brothers of Phi Alpha Tau fraternity at Emerson College in Boston, MA announced that they raised up to $19,000 from their IndieGoGo campaign. The campaign was created to help raise donations for a fellow member’s gender alteration surgeries. The member, Donnie Collins, was born with female organs but self identifies as a male and wants to undergo a double mastectomy and chest contouring surgery. After finding out that his university insurance did not cover gender alteration surgeries, his fraternity brothers went out of their way to raise funds. Commend the brothers at Phi Alpha Tau for their compassionate and sincere actions for the transgender community.

Collins, a 20-year-old, came out at the age of 17 as a transgender person. During the process of pledging for Phi Alpha Tau, the members learned that Collins needed $4,800 for both surgeries. After the brothers found out that the insurance company denied Collins any financial support, they decided to take matters into their own hands. Through the use of social media, the brothers raised well over their intended goal. The awareness fundraising website managed to raise $19K with still over a month left.  One of the brothers stated that they’d much “rather have a hundred people donate $10 than 10 people donate $100.” Through this campaign, the brothers are not only spreading awareness, they are also breaking down stereotypes and stigmas surrounding fraternities.

Since Collins only needs $4,800, the brothers stated that the remaining funds will be donated to the Jim Collins Foundation, which is a charity organization that helps transgender people pay for surgeries.  The fraternity and its members should be commended for their kind actions.

Dear Phi Alpha Tau at Emerson College,

The proactive steps you guys took after finding out about a fellow member’s need for financial support are highly admirable. It is refreshing to see young adults take action for causes they are compassionate about. The amount of money your fraternity raised will help people who are often misunderstood and bullied.

Oftentimes, people do not understand what a transgender person is and thus they cast them aside and ignore their needs. Donnie Collins needed help when he sought out these two medical procedures and his insurance let him down. But you helped change his life forever by fundraising and spreading awareness. The fact that you guys will donate the remaining funds to the Jim Collins Foundation is also selfless.

Thank you for being so compassionate.
