Demand Connecticut Representative Resign for Lewd Comment to Teenage Girl

Target: State Representative Ernst Hewett

Goal: Resign for a lewd sexually harassing comment made to a teenage girl

Ernst Hewett, a state representative and deputy speaker in Connecticut made a lewd comment to a teenage girl. The 17-year-old girl was making a presentation to lawmakers at a budget meeting about programs offered at the Connecticut Science Center when Hewett said, “If you’re bashful I got a snake sitting under my desk here.” The remark was clearly intended as sexual innuendo. Sign the petition to demand the state representative resign for his sexually harassing comment.

The teen had been speaking to the group of lawmakers about how the programs at the Science Center helped her, “I am usually a very shy person, and now I am more outgoing. I was able to teach those children about certain things like snakes that we have and turtles that we have. I want to do something toward that, working with children when I get older.”

It was after this sentence that Hewett chose to make his lewd comment. The comment was inappropriate and constituted sexual harassment of an underage girl. Even members of Hewett’s party agreed that his comment was out of line. House Speaker Brenden Sharkey described the comment as “sexual innuendo” and “disturbing.” Hewett has been removed from his deputy speaker position.

Hewett’s has served five terms in the state house and was mayor of New London. Hewett has apologized for the comment and says he can understand why the comment was “misconstrued” as sexual innuendo. Sign the petition to condemn Hewett for the comment and demand he resign.

Dear Representative Hewett,

I am a citizen writing to condemn the lewd comment you made to a 17-year-old girl. Your comment was unprompted, unsolicited, had no relation to what was being discussed at the budget meeting and was sexual harassment. You claim it was “misconstrued” as sexual innuendo, Brenden Sharkey the House Speaker disagrees and states that it was apparent to everyone at the meeting the comment was sexual.

It is clear that you still fail to understand why the comment was inappropriate despite the loss of your deputy speakership. It was particularly discouraging for a young woman who was trying to be politically active for a cause that she cares about. Your boorish behavior exemplifies the challenges women face in politics and makes you unsuitable for public office.

I urge you to do the right thing and resign.

…”Hewett has apologized for the comment and says he can understand why the comment was “misconstrued” as sexual innuendo”…

If this dirtbag understands why this was misconstrued, why did he say it in the first place?

Dirtbag or idiot, he needs to go away.

  2. It’s another example of why we need more female politicians. The more men, the more creepy commentary…
