Demand British Councilman Resign for Saying Disabled Children Should be Euthanized

Target: Cornwall Councilor Colin Brewer

Goal: Demand councilor resign for his statement advocating that disabled children be “put down.”

Colin Brewer, a British Councilor in Cornwall, made an outrageous statement in which he advocated for euthanasia of disabled children. He said, “Disabled children cost the council too much money and should be put down.” He made the statement to Theresa Court who works for the charity Disability Cornwall. Despite a formal complaint, he refuses to resign. Sign the petition to demand the councilor resign for his outrageous and inappropriate statement.

The incident occurred in October 2011. Court made a formal complaint against the councilor that was only recently resolved. The Independent Standards Committee ruled that Brewer had to write a letter of apology to Disability Cornwall. Brewer continues to maintain that he did nothing wrong: “I have no intention of resigning. I don’t think I have done anything wrong. I have apologised.” He sent the letter with a second-class stamp and the letter was folded into eight pieces.

The councilor clearly does not regret his actions. Theresa Court does not believe that proper action has been taken, saying, “Quite frankly it is an insult that he had to be told to apologise after a year and a half.” Brewer’s comments are particularly disturbing because disabled children are most impacted by budget cuts and the current economic climate. Crimes against disabled peoples are also on the rise in the UK.

Brewer’s statement has also been condemned by the disability charity Scopes. Brewer claims, “Sometimes people can just catch you on the wrong day,” and that he was feeling “hot under the collar” when he made the statement. Sign the petition to condemn the councilor’s inexcusable remarks and demand he resign.

Dear Councilor Brewer,

I am a human rights activist and citizen writing to demand that you resign for your remarks about disabled children. In a meeting with Theresa Court who works for the disabled charity Disability Cornwall you made the statement that, “Disabled children cost the council too much money and should be put down.” This statement qualifies as hate speech and is the kind of statement that one might expect to hear from eugenicists and advocates of genocide.

The statement is not suitable for someone in public office. This is a view that Scopes concurs with: “To hear such an ill-judged and insensitive statement from a councillor is deeply disturbing and demonstrates that they are clearly not fit for office.” Your attempts to excuse your behavior by claiming that you were having a bad day or were upset about budget cuts make it clear that you have no remorse for your hurtful statement. The Facebook group “Councillor Colin Brewer should resign” has over 500 likes.

I urge you to save whatever is left of your dignity and resign gracefully.
