Help Technology Companies Fight Malicious Patent Lawsuits

Target: U.S. Congress House Representatives

Goal: Protect small businesses from malicious patents intended solely to profit from settlement fees

A recent trend of “patent trolling” (a process in which a company asserts a patent as a business model instead of an actual product, forcing the company the patent targets to spend millions of dollars in legal fees to fight the patent) has been sweeping the nation lately. While some larger companies that have been targeted by “patent trolls”, such as Newegg and Twitter, have the resources to fight these bogus patents, many smaller companies and businesses don’t, forcing them to pay settlement fees to the companies who filed the patents. Fortunatly, a recent bill that was submitted to the Congressional House of Representatives, known as the SHIELD (Saving High-Tech Innovators from Egregious Legal Disputes) Act, aims to put down patent trolls for good.

Introduced by Representatives Peter DeFazio and Jason Chaffetz, the SHIELD Act, if passed, would cover all of the legal costs accrued from fighting a bogus patent as long as the “patent troll” loses the case (as they often do on the grounds that the patent is found to be invalid or that no infringement is being committed by the troll’s target). The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has already showed their support for the SHIELD Act and is urging readers to help get the Act passed in Congress.

Help support the EFF and the thousands of innocent employees who have been affected by patent trolling by signing this petition. Nobody should have to be forced to deal with the hassle and cost of a patent lawsuit in order to serve somebody else’s greed.

PETITION LETTER

Dear U.S. Congressional Representatives,

The recent trend of “patent trolling” that has been affecting thousands of innocent companies and their employees must be stopped. This malicious practice; which forces smaller companies to pay settlement fees to the companies that file the patents in order to avoid an even more costly lawsuit, is despicable. It serves no purpose other than to further the greedy and selfish ambitions of the companies filing these bogus patents.

The SHIELD Act, which was recently introduced by Representative Peter DeFazio and Jason Chaffetz, will help to curb the rampant spread of patent trolling if passed. By signing this petition, I am urging you to support the EFF and Representatives DeFazio and Chaffetz by casting your vote in favor of the SHIELD Act.

Sincerely,
