Target: Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel
Goal: Urge support for a Chicken Ordinance in Chicago to preserve the raising of chickens in the city
Chicago law permits residents to humanely keep chickens as pets and for eggs in within the city limits. However, pending legislation threatens to take away Chicagoans right to domestic enjoyment and fresh home-grown eggs.
Local activist group, Chicago Chicken Enthusiasts, aims to preserve the city’s existing policies, teach chicken owners best practices, and dispel common myths. Contrary to popular belief, chickens rarely carry any diseases and create less noise, waste, and odor than dogs. There are currently no limit to the number of chickens Chicago residents can keep in their yards.
Chicago is not alone in its interest in urban farming. Many other states and municipalities allow poultry within city limits; however, the regulations vary greatly. Thankfully, the slaughter of all animals, including chickens, is prohibited in Chicago and punishable by law. As described in WindyCityGal Linda’s blog, “Eating your own chicken’s eggs is a great pleasure. They’re as fresh as possible, the texture is more firm, and you know the chickens were treated humanely.”
By passing a Chicken Ordinance in Chicago, we can control the urban poultry movement by setting a limit on the number of chickens allowed without a permit, require training workshops on best practices, and enforce anti-slaughtering laws. The Chicago Chicken Enthusiasts need our support to continue providing resources for coop construction contractors, feed and supply vendors, and educational events.

Dear Mayor Emanuel,
Raising chickens in the city has benefited Chicagoans for many years. Urban poultry practices provide financially frugal households with affordable nutrition and lasting enjoyment.
Despite common myths, chickens do not provide excessive noise, disease, or unwanted predators in residential areas. In fact, chickens are much less of a nuisance than the common household pets we all know and love.
I am urging you to support a Chicken Ordinance in Chicago to preserve the responsible and humane raising of chickens in the city. By implanting guidelines for urban chicken ownership, we can bridge the gap of understanding between chicken owners and their neighbors.
