Stop North Carolina School From Using Animals in Medical Training

Target: Brody School of Medicine Dean Paul R. G. Cunningham

Goal: For the North Carolina school to stop using animals in its medical training programs

Small animals like rabbits and ferrets are being used as test subjects at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. In the year 2013, technology is far too advanced for schools to still be using animals as test subjects. The school needs to stop using animals for their medical training programs.

The animals are used to teach students endotracheal intubation, which is a procedure that places a tube in the animal’s windpipe through the mouth or nose. This is an uncomfortable process for a helpless animal to go through. Non-animal models are used instead of live animals in over 95% of advanced trauma life support classes in the United States. This proves that there is an alternative to testing on innocent, small animals and the school should seek out how to incorporate this into their experiments. This would spare the small animals from potentially being harmed.

Animal experimentation traumatizes the animal and can leave them permanently scarred. There are plenty of available alternatives to experimenting on helpless animals, and the school can easily end this torture. Sign the petition below to ask the Dean of East Carolina University to end the animal experimentation and to seek other alternatives.

Dear Dean Paul R.G. Cunningham,

The Brody School of Medicine is currently using small animals in medical experiments. The process of endotracheal intubation involves tube being placed into the windpipe through the mouth or nose. For a small, helpless animal, this procedure is extremely uncomfortable and can be very traumatizing.

In over 95% of medical practicing procedures like this, a non-animal model is used. If such a high percentage of classes are avoiding experimenting on animals, then why aren’t you? It is a more humane thing to do and can save the innocence of a small animal. The high percentage of schools that offer an alternative is reason enough for you to switch your practices.

Our technology has come too far for universities to still be practicing procedures on helpless animals. It’s sickening to imagine these poor animals being traumatized for the rest of their lives because of your school. Please use non-animal models for your future experiments and spare these innocent animals.

  1. These cruel practices for medical training have become obsolete in most universities. There are alternatives.
