Goal: Prohibit bean bag rounds, underwater explosives, and other deterrents that pose risk to protected seals.
Scare caps and seal crackers: these are two of the fanciful terms used to describe attacks on seals that are taking place off the coast of Tasmania. In reality, these weapons consist of underwater explosives, darts, and shells filled with lead shot. Each of them is routinely used around salmon farms in order to keep seals away. At least 70 seals have died in close proximity to these farms in recent years. Now, if an initiative driven by salmon farm owners goes through, the dangerous methods could become commonplace over the next three years.
Seals are supposed to be protected under Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act. As a state of Australia, Tasmania must adhere by this law that criminalizes killing, injuring, or even moving seals. The actions of the salmon farm operators clearly violate the act, but government officials seem more interested in offloading responsibility than enforcing their own laws.

Dear Minister Ley,
As the Minister of the Environment, it is your duty to protect lands, waters, and their inhabitants and to enforce laws safeguarding these protections. When you were recently asked about the use of seal crackers and scare caps on federally protected seals, you referred this matter to other authorities. The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act falls under your purview, and you must be the ultimate arbiter in this matter.
Special interests like offshore salmon farms cannot drive your decision-making. You have been presented with evidence that these supposedly harmless scare tactics are injuring and even killing marine life in large numbers. Do not ignore your obligation to stop these flagrant violations of federal policy.
Ban the use of dangerous seal deterrents at once.

Please stop all animal cruelty! Seals deserve to have their habitat protected from abuse and cruelty.
All wildlife needs to be heavily protected and allowed to live the lives they were meant to live. ALL THOSE WHO ENJOY KILLING NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM SOCIETY FOREVER – OR MAYBE SUFERTHE SAME ABUSE…IN MY OPINION
Every animal needs protection against cruelty. There must be a way to protect the salmon farms without killing seals in the process. No animal should be killed when in their own habitat.
This mentality of killing one specie to profit from another has to stop! Whether it be in this case or with Ranchers killing wildlife to sell their cattle!

Seals have to eat, too. STOP using harmful deterrents and START using non lethal methods to keep seals away from salmon farms IMMEDIATELY.

That’s the problem with making new laws. If nobody follows through with enforcing them, the laws are useless.
It is disgusting that people are allowed to do such cruel and environmentally damaging things as this, without punishment! These tools should not even exist! Whomever makes them should be punished, as well as those use them! Save these rare seals, and prosecute their killers!
Who are the sadists that come up with these horrible things to do to animals? They should be arrested for animal cruelty and thrown in jail! Stop this immediately and crack down on animal abusers, particularly when they are protected by law. Do your job! It doesn’t take a lot of effort to be kind.
More and more I hear about Australia, animal abuse and cruelty, and how the leadership does nothing. Obviously, the ranchers and farmers have deep pockets. Is bribery a way of life now, while ethics and morality is thrown out the window? Shame shame shame.

If any farmers on any salmon farms are found to be killing seals, the farms must be automatically shut down. The salmon then released. All the farmers must each spend 10 years in prison with no early parole, each farmer pay a $800,000 fine, and every single person must be banned for life from owning or working in any farm ever again. The cruelty must be stopped. Hit them where it hurts if they aren’t listening. Take away their farms.
How horrific! What a horrible painful way to die! Get the salmon farmers out of their waters! That’s The seals food! Confiscate their money as punishment, too,not to mention put them in prison for years for murder.
Incidents like this should be a wake up call to every person on this planet about the evil that exists in Government. Here we have seals that are protected by law and yet the Government turns a blind eye to the killing of them. Corruption, Lies, and Deception.
