Save Appalachia’s Blair Mountain From Destruction

Target: West Virginia Governor, Earl Ray Tomblin

Goal: Preserve the beautiful and historic Blair Mountain

One of Appalachia’s most important historic landmarks, Blair Mountain, is at risk of being destroyed due to mountaintop coal mining initiatives. This historically significant and pristine environment must be protected at all costs; West Virginia’s legislators must stop pandering to coal lobbyists to make sure such protection is granted.

Blair Mountain commemorates the brave men and women who risked their lives for a movement that has brought Americans the labor laws relevant today. In 1921, the largest labor insurrection in US History ensued at this site when 10,000 coal miners fought for five days against a coal-operator backed military army.

Five different surface mining permits currently threaten Blair Mountain and national banks continue to fund mining companies planning the destruction of the battlefield and surrounding communities. Mountaintop removal mining is the most destructive form of coal mining and has been referred to as ‘strip mining on steroids.’  This practice will not only wipe out a historic landmark for future generations, but it will also annihilate the region’s ecosystems and  exterminate the plants and animals native to the region.

Efforts to protect this beautiful mountainous region are spearheaded by the Blair Mountain Heritage Alliance. Sign the petition below to support the Alliance and let West Virginia’s government and the coal mining industries know that the destruction of Blair Mountain is irresponsible and unacceptable.

Dear Governor Tomblin,

The state of West Virginia is home to some of the nation’s most beautiful resources and historic landmarks, including Blair Mountain. Despite the coal industry’s powerful lobby, you have the power to save this important landmark from complete destruction and preserve its history for generations to come.

Please consider how the devastating process of mountaintop removal mining poses serious environmental risks to this region’s ecosystem. Furthermore, your ancestors did not fight for their lives in the 1921 labor battle of Blair Mountain to have it simply blown to bits for the sake of financial profit.

I am urging you to support the efforts of the Blair Mountain Heritage Alliance for the sake of environmental and historic preservation. Your support will ensure that coal mining companies do not thoughtlessly eliminate a landmark that plays an important role in the history of West Virginia and America.
