Target: Jon Huntsman, former governor of Utah and 2012 Republican presidential candidate

Goal: Applaud former Governor Jon Huntsman for supporting marriage equality

Recently Jon Huntsman, a Republican party member, former governor of Utah, and former 2012 Republican presidential candidate, came out in support of marriage equality. When Huntsman was governor of Utah, he supported civil unions and extending reciprocal beneficiary rights for same-sex couples. In August 2011 Huntsman said, “I believe in traditional marriage. But I also believe that subordinate to that we haven’t done an adequate job when it comes to equality. That is just my personal belief. Everyone is entitled to their personal belief, too.”

Now, Huntsman is moving a step further and saying that Republican and conservative leaders should “push their states to join the nine others that allow their citizens to marry.” Huntsman continued to announce, “I’ve been married for 29 years. My marriage has been the greatest joy of my life. There is nothing conservative about denying other Americans the ability to forge that same relationship with the person they love.”

It is inspiring to a political figure such as Jon Huntsman urging Republican leaders to  move towards a more accepting, open, and equal future. Over half of Americans support same-sex marriage, and only 39% of Americans oppose it. By coming out as a proponent of gay marriage, Jon Huntsman is helping usher in an era where marriage equality will be looked at as a bi-partisan party issue. Sign the petition below to thank him for his public statements and show support of his message. As Huntsman said of legalizing gay marriage, it is “the right thing to do.”

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Jon Huntsman,
When you publicly announced your support of marriage equality and urged Republican leaders to “push their states to join the nine others that allow their citizens to marry,” you acted in a way that was inspiring and progressive.
America cannot stand on the archaic, outdated theory that marriage is only between a man and a woman; this tramples on the rights of thousands of Americans in same-sex relationships, and drawn-out debate about gay marriage continues to absorb time and resources that could be allocated elsewhere if this issue were settled, once and for all.
America is moving towards a more equal future. This transition has not been easy, and the path has been long. Currently the majority of Americans believe in gay marriage and believe that it will be legalized within their lifetime.
As you said, “All Americans should be treated equally by the law.” I applaud you for your words, audacity, and forward-thinking.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
