Target: Michelle Obama
Goal: Thank Michelle Obama for her campaign aimed at teaching children better health and fitness habits
A campaign launched by Michelle Obama to promote better health and fitness for America’s children is about to celebrate its three-year anniversary. Our country is facing an epidemic of childhood obesity, and in a media atmosphere clamoring with unhealthy food promotion, healthy messages are a breath of fresh air. Thank the First Lady for her contribution to children’s fitness.
Childhood obesity rates in the U.S. have tripled over the past 30 years, and today nearly one in three American children are overweight or obese. The results surround us now, but the causes are rooted in the lifestyle changes of the past several decades. Walks to school have been replaced by car rides, free time is spent in front of the TV or computer, and snacks and fast-food dinners are far more frequent than in past generations.
Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign was launched in 2010 to reverse these negative changes, and it has come a long way in doing so.
Several Let’s Move! programs focusing on the food served at school have resulted in increased availability of nutritious food and healthy cooking education classes for school chefs. Many schools have also signed up for the Healthier US School Challenge, an initiative encouraging promotion of better nutrition and fitness. Let’s Move! has also teamed up with Disney, the National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball to get kids excited about playing sports and enjoying physical activity. “Let’s Move Outside” is another initiative that links parents and children to activities in the great outdoors surrounding their home city, whatever they may be. The campaign has attained many other triumphs in children’s health and fitness – information is available at the campaign website – and they are all worthy of our appreciation.
In celebration of 3 years’ hard work and success, Let’s Move! has launched two public service ads featuring Sesame Street’s Big Bird that will be distributed to 320 public broadcasting stations. Acknowledge the accomplishments of Let’s Move! and thank Michelle Obama for leadership in promoting health and fitness for America’s youth.
Dear Michelle Obama,
Let’s Move! is getting ready to celebrate three years’ hard work, and the accomplishments the campaign has achieved are more than worthy of appreciation. Thanks to your efforts and the initiatives of Let’s Move!, healthier food is available at schools, kids are exercising more, and families across the country have better access to outdoor activities.
Although overcoming the epidemic of childhood obesity will be a long-term process, Let’s Move! has taken big steps in the right direction. Better nutrition and physical health leads to better mental performance and happier children. Through Let’s Move!, you have moved our country’s youth towards a brighter future. Thank you for your profound thoughtfulness, well-advised efforts, and leadership in promoting health and fitness to America’s children.
