United Nations Must Investigate Torture, Execution and Forced Disappearance in Mali

Mali_West-Afrika_jan.febr._2008

Target: Ban-Ki Moon, Director-General of the United Nations.

Goal: To end the torture, execution and forced disappearance of Malian civilians by the military.

International authorities should immediately begin an investigation into the abuses currently being committed by the Malian military against Islamic citizens. If enough evidence can be acquired, the leaders responsible should face hearings in front of the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. Human rights groups have reported that since the French-led offensive in January that pushed an Islamist military group (MUJAO) out of the area, government soldiers appear to be targeting members of Arab ethnic groups around Timbuktu and other areas. The soldiers appear to believe that members of these communities supported the Islamist troops that had previously held these areas.

Witnesses have told human rights organizations that have tortured, executed and forcibly disappeared men who were believed to be a part of the MUJAO or helped them in any way. Witnesses near the town of Boni reported that Malian soldiers detained two young men for allegedly being fighters in the MUJAO. The soldiers forced the men into an army vehicle and drove them to the outskirts of town where they were shot.

These abuses are some of the worst violations of human rights. Witness reports should be enough to show the international community that action must be taken to reign in the unchecked killing and torture in Mali. Retribution by the government against civilians is unacceptable. Sign this petition and demand that the United Nations take action against the violence towards civilians in Mali.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director-General Ban-Ki Moon,

The violence currently being committed against Malian civilians is unacceptable. Those who are in charge of the troops orders must be held accountable for the killing and the torture of Malian men and boys. The government that is supposed to protect them is directly violating their human right to life.

After being subjected to ill treatment at the hands of the Islamist rebel group MUJAO, it is unacceptable that civilians continue to be targeted by the government. The international community must do all it can to halt the violence. I ask that you immediately set up a committee to investigate claims of torture, murder and forced disappearances in Mali and bring those responsible to justice.

Sincerely,
