Target: Glenn Beck
Goal: Protest Glenn Beck’s statement that video games led to the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut
During the most recent episode of his web-show, conservative political commentator Glenn Beck went on a tirade in which he blamed video games for the Sandy Hook shootings. During the 7-minute segment, Beck claimed to know the “truth” behind Adam Lanza’s decision to commit the Sandy Hook murders, citing the alleged “trove” of violent video games that was later discovered in Lanza’s home.
Beck went on to claim that it wasn’t Lanza’s apparent mental issues or even his ready access to firearms that prompted his horrendous acts; it was the supposed hours he spent playing violent video games in his room. Beck even claimed to have an understanding of what Lanza must have been feeling, saying that, in Lanza’s mind, “killing the innocent Sandy Hook teachers and students was akin to scoring points in a typical video game.”
Beck’s grand-standing, in which he claims video games are a “gateway drug” that numbs the hearts of children and turns them into violent killers, is just the latest in a long series of myths based in nothing but ignorance and fear. Beck seems to think that by merely saying his claims “are medical fact, not crazy theory” that viewers are just supposed to believe him without question. Please protest Beck’s radical, unfounded, and ignorant claims by signing this petition.
Dear Glenn Beck,
As “sincere” as you may have looked during your speech in which you denounced violent video games as nothing more than heart-numbing gateway drugs for kids, your lack of evidence ruins any credibility you were hoping to gain. You claim that video games erode our ability to distinguish between fiction and reality, which is funny because I’d say a lot of what you claimed in your speech was just that: fiction.
To this day there have been no conclusive studies linking video game violence with real-life violence, a fact you failed to mention in your speech. Indeed, you seemed much too concerned with rattling off your own “facts” to even bother paying attention to actual evidence which goes against everything you claimed. I hope that this petition letter will urge you to take more care in what you say regarding subjects you clearly know nothing about. You want a fact to consider? How about this: ignorant and misinformed media will do more harm to this country than video games ever could.
