Condemn Republicans’ Offensive Rape Joke

Target: Nila Croll, Larimer County Republican Women President

Goal: Condemn Colorado Republicans for using rape jokes to condemn already insensitive statements about rape.

Recently, in a debate over whether college students should be allowed to carry concealed firearms on campus, Colorado Democratic Representative Joe Salazar stated that female students were too paranoid to be trusted with dangerous weapons. The lawmaker suggested that women were not aware enough to accurately detect danger and would probably end up pulling the trigger on an innocent person. Eager to condemn their Democratic counterparts, Colorado Republicans rushed forward with their own offensive spin on sexual assault.

Larimer County Republican Women, in an attempt to suggest that women need more than simply whistle-equipped rape kits to protect themselves from rape, decided to mock sexual violence itself. They created a fake rape kit with a giant whistle and a pen and labeling it “In Case of Rape, Robbery, or Assault OPEN IMMEDIATELY.” The whistle was named the “Colorado Co*k-Block Rape Prevention Whistle.” Colorado Republicans then posed with the fake kit and uploaded a number of pictures to Twitter.

Considering that one in four women will be raped while she attends college, and that university officials have participated in the perpetuation of rape culture, the Republican response to their Democratic counterpart is not only ineffective, it is even more insulting. Making light of sexual assault on top of allegations of women being too “paranoid” to recognize sexual violence only reinforces the ideals that Colorado Republicans claim to be reproving. Sign the petition below to condemn Colorado Republicans for their inappropriate actions in this situation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Nila Croll,

Recently, in a debate over whether college students should be allowed to carry concealed firearms on campus, Colorado Democratic Representative Joe Salazar stated that female students were too paranoid to be trusted with dangerous weapons. Following these offensive remarks, the Larimer County Republican Women rushed forward to condemn their Democratic counterpart.

In an attempt to suggest that women need more than simply whistle-equipped rape kits to protect themselves from rape, your group created a fake rape kit, with a giant whistle and a pen and labeling it “In Case of Rape, Robbery, or Assault OPEN IMMEDIATELY.” The whistle was named the “Colorado Co*k-Block Rape Prevention Whistle.” Colorado Republicans then posed with the fake kit and uploaded a number of pictures to Twitter.

Your response to Democrat Joe Salazar’s statements is not only ineffective, it is even more insulting. Making light of sexual assault on top of allegations of women being too “paranoid” to recognize sexual violence only reinforces the ideals that your group claims to be reproving. I am writing to express my disappointment and to condemn the irresponsible, offensive actions of the Larimer County Republican Women.

Sincerely,

  1. Every person’s mother could be a victim of rape. Then how would you feel?
