Condemn Lawmaker for Using Gun Control Bill for Target Practice

Target-Practice-Bill

Target: Representative Eric Burlison

Goal: Condemn Burlison for immature behavior concerning proposed gun law.

Republican Representative for Springfield, Eric Burlison, recently uploaded a video with the description, “See how Rep. Eric Burlison found a good use for House Bill 545.” The video begins with Burlison criticizing proposed legislation banning assault rifles and large capacity magazines. Burlison emphasizes his point by using the bill as target practice. After opening fire on the bill, Burlison shows a copy of the hole-ridden piece of paper and states, “You’re right, it does make for a good bill.”

The proposed bill prohibits any person, corporation, or other entity in the state from manufacturing, importing, possessing, purchasing, selling, or transferring any assault weapon or large capacity magazine, as specified in the bill. Any violation of these provisions is a class C felony. In the video Burlison paraphrases the bill, saying, “[It] would make it illegal to not only own some of the weapons, but you’d have to relinquish them. If you don’t…you’ll be a felon and potentially serve in jail for up to seven years.”

Burlison has the right to critique any bill he chooses. However, his antics in this case are highly unprofessional. The recent Newtown rampage is still fresh in most people’s mind, and there has been a recent surge in gun-related deaths and injuries. Mass shootings are becoming more and more common. Whether or not Burlison agrees with the bill, using it for target practice shows a deep level of immaturity. It belittles the seriousness of the issue, and is a dismissive, patronizing way to deal with a very real problem. Sign the petition below to condemn Rep. Eric Burlison for his unfortunate behavior.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Eric Burlison,

You recently made the choice to upload a video with the description, “See how Rep. Eric Burlison found a good use for House Bill 545.” The video begins as a critique of the bill, and then spirals out of control when you choose to emphasize your point by using the bill as target practice. After opening fire on the bill, you hold up a copy of the hole-ridden piece of paper and states, “You’re right, it does make for a good bill.”

You have the right to critique any bill you choose. However, your actions in this case are highly unprofessional. The recent Newtown killings are still fresh in most people’s mind, and there has been a recent surge in gun-related deaths and injuries. Mass shootings are becoming more and more common. Whether or not you agree with the bill, using it for target practice belittles the seriousness of the issue, and is a dismissive, patronizing way to deal with a very real problem. I am writing to express my deep disappointment in your unfortunate decision to make this video.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
