Stop Giving Tax Breaks and Handouts to Big Oil

Target: Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Goal: Do not allow more offshore drilling and tax relief for North Sea corporations.

Oil and gas mega-corporations in a prominent British region reportedly paid no corporate tax for the last several years while reaping hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks. Taxpayers are footing the bill for these reckless polluters, paying billions for the likes of Shell and BP to decommission rigs. Worse yet, this corporate welfare is subsidizing future environmental destruction.

The North Sea is currently home to about 180 oil rigs. Corporations are apparently seeking approval to implement 30 more offshore projects, with one initiative online responsible for 800 million barrels of oil. These damaging proposals completely contradict supposed pledges by these entities to reach net-zero carbon emissions in the coming decades. They also undercut Britain’s own similar pledges.

Sign the petition below to demand United Kingdom leadership stop this hypocritical and underhanded support of climate crisis drivers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Johnson,

The United Kingdom just led one of the most important forums on climate change in recent memory. To quote you at this event, Mr. Prime Minister, climate change is a “detonation that will end human life as we know it. Except that the tragedy is this is not a movie, and the doomsday device is real and the clock is ticking to the furious rhythm of hundreds of billions of pistons and turbines and furnaces and engines with which we are pumping carbon into the air faster and faster in record outputs and quilting the earth in an invisible and suffocating blanket of CO2.”

You spoke the truth then, but your actions matter most now. At the moment, those actions defy your assertions, particularly in relation to North Sea oil. The United Kingdom already touts one of the lowest tax rates for Big Oil in the world. This leniency has enabled corporations to pay no tax, haul in generous tax handouts, and put the onus for the oil industry cleaning up its act on ordinary taxpayers.

Even more disturbing is the reported proposal of 30 additional offshore oil sites in the North Sea alone. Such a reality would render all of the UK’s promises on reducing carbon emissions meaningless. Just BP and Shell pump an estimated 1.7 billion tons of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere every ear.

Please do not let these incredibly damaging initiatives come to pass. Join the calls for a ban on any more fossil fuel projects in this region. More critically, hold the corporations already peddling pollution to greater account.

In the battle of the world vs. climate change, do not let the UK stand on the front lines of climate change.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
