Target: Republican Senator Branden Petersen
Goal: Applaud Petersen’s choice to abandon the conservative agenda and sponsor gay marriage
Branden Petersen, a freshman Minnesota senator, will soon become the first Republican lawmaker to publicly support gay marriage. This is a huge step forward in the battle for LGBT rights and will lead the way in changing future political debate on the issue. Thank Petersen for his vote of confidence on gay marriage, and for clearing a path other Republicans can follow.
As one of the majority of Republican legislators who voted against gay marriage in 2012, Petersen’s recent decision to support such unions is a definitive breakaway from his party’s beliefs. “At this point, I am concerned about doing the right thing,” said Petersen.
In becoming co-sponsor of a bill legalizing gay marriage, Petersen has initiated an important change in political climate. “As this conversation continues in the Legislature, there will be Republicans who will vote for marriage,” said Jake Loesch, a spokesperson for Minnesotans United for All Families and a GOP member. Indeed, timely actions like Petersen’s often shift the weight of what is to come on Capitol Hill.
The Republican senator does have some stipulations to his support of the bill, but they are reasonable conservative arguments. Including a guarantee that the bill will allow any religious leader to opt out of performing a gay marriage, and that kids in same-sex marriages will have the same financial guarantees as children of other married couples in the event of divorce, Petersen’s conditions are aimed at legitimizing gay marriage and not limiting it’s bounds.
Any politician – Democrat or Republican – incurs significant risks in making decisions contrary to the party majority. Petersen chose to make one in favor of equal rights, and deserves our commendation. Sign this petition and thank Branden Petersen for supporting gay marriage.
Dear Senator Petersen,
Your readiness to support gay marriage in Minnesota is both honorable and courageous. Gay men and women have the same rights as other citizens, and their unions deserve the same respect and privileges granted to traditional marriages.
Equal marriage rights for same-sex unions have been denied for too long – a fact that has caused much suffering for American families all across the United States. In co-sponsoring a bill to legalize gay marriage in Minnesota, you have acted against the views of your party members, but in accordance with our Constitution. Thank you for your contribution in the uphill battle for marriage equality.
