Target: Charles Schumer, Influential Democratic Senator
Goal: Block Senate approval of highly restrictive anti-abortion laws
A bill forcing new restrictions on abortion clinics is currently being reviewed by the Senate. Sponsored by Republican State Representative Mary Sue McClurkin, the bill would impose extremely strict regulations that would greatly limit the availability and operations of abortion clinics. Sign this petition and keep pro-choice options available to all.
The Women’s Health and Safety Act — also known as House Bill 57 — would make it a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison for a nurse, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant to dispense abortion-inducing medications. This would effectively eliminate the non-surgical method that makes up 17 – 20% of all abortions. Legally requiring expensive renovations and outlawing out-of-state doctors at abortion clinics, this bill would force many clinics to shut down entirely. House Bill 57 has even been criticized as an attempt by pro-life fanatics to effectively outlaw abortion.
Seven states have signed similar legislation into law, and the effects on abortion clinics and women seeking to end untimely pregnancies have been devastating. In April 2012, a Women’s Health and Safety Act was signed into law in Arizona. Now Arizonians who have not been dissuaded of abortion have much more trouble attaining it, and are shamed for their efforts. “This is the most draconian right-wing legislature I’ve ever seen,” said former Planned Parenthood national president Gloria Feldt of the new Arizona laws.
The women of the United States deserve a choice when it comes to abortion. Stop this right wing juggernaut of legislature from taking that choice away and urge Senator Charles Schumer to lead the charge against the Women’s Health and Safety Act.
Dear Senator Schumer,
The Senate is now facing a bill that would further restrict public access to abortion and force the shut down of countless clinics offering the service. We have seen the effects of the Women’s Health and Safety Act in several U.S. states — it is not effective in making abortions ‘safer’ while keeping them available. House Bill 57 is an effort based on religious ideologies to effectively stamp out abortion clinics.
The women of the United States deserve a choice when it comes to abortion. They need not have conservative opinions foisted on them through this type of legislature, and key Democratic senators like yourself have the sway to block it. I urge you to vote against the Women’s Health and Safety Act, and stand for the right of a woman to choose.
