Bring Imprisoned Veteran Home

Target: Anthony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State

Goal: Secure release of photojournalist and Marine veteran Austin Tice from captivity.

As the final American troops withdrew from Afghanistan, at least one veteran of the conflict remains in captivity in another volatile country: Syria. Austin Tice, a former Marine captain who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, was detained as he attempted to leave Syria in 2012. He was working as a photojournalist at the time. The last image the world saw of Tice was a group of armed men holding him hostage in a video released shortly after his capture. Throughout the years since, belief has remained high among his family and among American officials that Tice is still alive. Two administrations have passed, but this American’s fate remains in limbo.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers and Tice’s family have called upon the Biden administration to finally help free this man. After a failed negotiation earlier in the year, efforts seemed to stall. Recently, though, both President Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken have reaffirmed their commitment to securing Tice’s release.

Sign the petition below to hold the nation’s top diplomat to this vow.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Blinken,

“All my heart Austin, I hope you get this message… I’m so grateful to be your mom, and I can hardly wait to hold you again.” As the family of Austin Tice marked his 40th birthday without their loved one’s presence, this photojournalist and Marine veteran’s mother gave her son the only comfort she could. Almost ten years and two administrations after his capture, this family has not lost hope.

Please heed their calls, along with the calls of bipartisan lawmakers, to engage in direct diplomatic negotiations. Honor what you characterized as your personal mission to bring Austin Tice home.

Sincerely,
