Discipline Indiana Teacher for Supporting ‘Traditional Prom’ Barring Gay Students

Target: Indiana Board of Education

Goal: Punish Indiana teacher who supported a prom barring gay students

Recently, in Sullivan, Indiana, special education teacher Diana Medley became spokesperson for a group of people pushing to hold a so-called ‘traditional’ prom that would bar gay students. Medley was quoted saying that “gays have no purpose” and she believed homosexuality to be a choice.

The effort to hold an alternative prom came as a protest to Sullivan High School board’s decision to allow two girls to attend the Sullivan High School prom together. An online petition was created pushing to have Medley fired, which received 15,000 signatures from all over the world in the first few days.

While many believe that Medley should be fired or disciplined, the Indiana Board of Education has decided to not take any disciplinary action in regards to Medley’s offensive prejudice. As a teacher, Medley has a responsibility to the safety and well-being of her students. Additionally, as a special education teacher, she is likely to work with students vulnerable to bullying and ridicule regarding their physical and/or mental condition. By publicly stating that an entire group of human beings serve no purpose in life, Medley has clearly compromised any trust as an educator.

The Indiana Board of Education has a responsibility to discipline Diana Medley. Sign the petition below and urge the Indiana Board of Education to take action on this issue.

Dear Indiana Board of Education,

Diana Medley, an Indiana special education teacher, recently publicly stated that she believes gay people have no purpose in life. She made this statement on a local Indiana talk show while promoting the small coalition in Sullivan to hold a ‘traditional prom’ that would bar gay students.

As a teacher, Diana Medley has a responsibility to the safety and well-being of her students. Working with special education students who may face prejudice and bullying due to a mental and/or physical disability, Medley’s obligation to protect and nurture her students is even more important. Diana Medley needs to face the consequences of her actions. I urge you to discipline this teacher for the offensive and prejudice comments she made about homosexuality as well as her support of holding a prom that would deny gay students. Please take action on this matter and discipline Diana Medley.

  1. Absurd that any student should not be allowed to attend the school prom.
